This introduction episode is about my backyard Aquaponics project that I have been working on for almost a year now. This episode just spends a few minutes explaining the project and its challenges. Aquaponics is very much like hydroponics, except for the fact that it uses fish as a source of food to grow your produce in water. See the image below of the current system under construction. Please feel free to give me feedback on this show to rob dot greenlee at yahoo.com and robgreenlee dotcom or twitter @robgreenlee . This is my first personal podcast since I stopped recording the Zune Insider podcast and the nationally syndicated WebTalk World Radio Show back in 2006.

WEBVTT

1
00:00:02.640 --> 00:00:07.080
Hello, This is Rob Greenlee. This is the first episode

2
00:00:07.200 --> 00:00:13.320
of my Digital Life podcast off of Rob Greenley dot com.

3
00:00:13.800 --> 00:00:17.120
And I just wanted to say hi to everybody and

4
00:00:17.160 --> 00:00:21.320
thank you for downloading this from Rob Greenley dot com.

5
00:00:21.359 --> 00:00:25.079
I'm gonna post this to a variety of places online,

6
00:00:25.920 --> 00:00:28.760
and it's just kind of my own personal journal of

7
00:00:29.519 --> 00:00:32.799
things that I'm up to and things that I might

8
00:00:32.840 --> 00:00:38.320
find interesting that I want to share with anybody who

9
00:00:38.359 --> 00:00:43.280
wants to subscribe to this. But and if you wanted

10
00:00:43.280 --> 00:00:47.159
to give me any kind of feedback, you can certainly

11
00:00:47.240 --> 00:00:53.159
send me an email to Rob at Rob Greenlee dot com.

12
00:00:53.240 --> 00:00:57.719
And if you have any ideas on things that I

13
00:00:57.759 --> 00:01:02.000
should explore or whatever in this audio podcast, then give

14
00:01:02.039 --> 00:01:05.799
me a buzz in my email address and I'll be

15
00:01:06.560 --> 00:01:09.280
happy to see what I can do to to expand

16
00:01:09.319 --> 00:01:12.599
on maybe that idea or that topic. But what I

17
00:01:12.599 --> 00:01:16.280
wanted to mention to you today was I'm on this

18
00:01:16.519 --> 00:01:20.480
journey that I've started here. Actually it started last summer

19
00:01:21.120 --> 00:01:26.680
to build an aquaponics system in my backyard, and uh,

20
00:01:26.920 --> 00:01:29.920
it's it's been a it's been a journey. I'm actually

21
00:01:30.040 --> 00:01:32.760
out here standing in it right now. It's not exactly

22
00:01:32.840 --> 00:01:35.439
making a lot of noise right now because it's not

23
00:01:35.560 --> 00:01:39.599
totally fired up. And I'll post some pictures to my

24
00:01:40.280 --> 00:01:45.239
blog about this thing. Actually, I've I've posted things to

25
00:01:45.280 --> 00:01:49.879
my Facebook account about my project. But I've I've spent

26
00:01:50.640 --> 00:01:54.040
the last year or so being a student of acaponics

27
00:01:54.439 --> 00:01:57.799
and I'm actually standing inside of my greenhouse right now.

28
00:01:58.519 --> 00:02:03.200
And it's it's basically a project in process, and it's

29
00:02:03.239 --> 00:02:08.919
not exactly something that can I say this I've finished.

30
00:02:09.840 --> 00:02:14.080
It's kind of in in process. I basically built a

31
00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:17.199
kind of like a home backyard greenhouse. It actually came

32
00:02:17.199 --> 00:02:19.960
as a kit and it's a six foot by eight

33
00:02:19.960 --> 00:02:23.840
foot in size, and I've gone through some training on acoponics.

34
00:02:23.840 --> 00:02:26.000
I don't know if you know what acaponics is, but

35
00:02:26.080 --> 00:02:33.639
it's basically growing lettuce and produce and vegetables in beds

36
00:02:33.680 --> 00:02:39.680
of water so there's no soil involved. And uh. And

37
00:02:39.800 --> 00:02:42.159
what I've done is I've I've built an old, my

38
00:02:42.240 --> 00:02:47.599
old custom system here and it's it can be a

39
00:02:47.639 --> 00:02:52.240
little frustrating to actually work on. I've I've struggled with it.

40
00:02:52.319 --> 00:02:57.240
All of the tanks are are all custom built and

41
00:02:58.039 --> 00:03:02.319
actually built from plywood, and that they have like pond

42
00:03:02.360 --> 00:03:06.919
liners in them and plumbing that that runs the water

43
00:03:07.039 --> 00:03:11.319
through the system. The d acoponics the foundation acoponics is

44
00:03:11.319 --> 00:03:16.360
basically growing produce based on fish waste. So you basically

45
00:03:16.400 --> 00:03:21.280
have a fish tank that funnels water through various types

46
00:03:21.360 --> 00:03:26.879
of growing medium where it's like these little clay balls

47
00:03:26.960 --> 00:03:30.319
or whatever. And then I also have what's called deep

48
00:03:30.319 --> 00:03:33.400
water rafts, which is basically just a bed of water

49
00:03:33.479 --> 00:03:38.599
that has a foam foam panel that that kind of

50
00:03:38.599 --> 00:03:42.199
sits on top and sorry about I got an airplane

51
00:03:42.199 --> 00:03:46.560
flying over right now. And then the plant's roots actually

52
00:03:46.719 --> 00:03:50.960
dangle into the water, so you basically circulate the water

53
00:03:51.960 --> 00:03:56.439
through all of these tanks and grow beds, and basically

54
00:03:56.479 --> 00:04:01.759
the roots just you know, suck nutrients from the soil.

55
00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:06.280
So actually, in the middle of building this, and it

56
00:04:06.400 --> 00:04:08.560
was just a pet project that I started working on.

57
00:04:09.199 --> 00:04:11.840
I flew down to Denver, Colorado about it about a

58
00:04:11.879 --> 00:04:14.360
year ago or so and and went through a pretty

59
00:04:14.360 --> 00:04:19.120
extensive training training program to to learn how to build

60
00:04:19.160 --> 00:04:25.279
an acaponics system. And it can be a complex and

61
00:04:25.399 --> 00:04:29.920
difficult thing to actually do. It's not as as easy

62
00:04:29.920 --> 00:04:31.680
as it sounds. You have to be an expert in

63
00:04:31.720 --> 00:04:36.240
a lot of different areas and and so I've been

64
00:04:36.319 --> 00:04:41.959
slowly learning and and uh, it's difficult to grow acoponics

65
00:04:42.040 --> 00:04:45.279
up in the Northwest where it's so cold and then

66
00:04:45.480 --> 00:04:51.319
dark in the winter months. But I've I've forged ahead

67
00:04:51.360 --> 00:04:57.839
and built one myself. It's kind of funny they've the

68
00:04:57.920 --> 00:05:01.120
further I dive into it, the more I I realized

69
00:05:01.160 --> 00:05:07.680
that that it's it's not as easy to do. Like

70
00:05:07.720 --> 00:05:10.360
I said, here in the Northwest, there's not as much

71
00:05:10.360 --> 00:05:14.759
sunlight and dealing with moisture and and rain and all

72
00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:19.680
these factors come into play. And I unfortunately I bought

73
00:05:19.680 --> 00:05:23.879
a greenhouse that doesn't have insulated panels, and so I

74
00:05:23.879 --> 00:05:28.040
have a real issue with the greenhouse and kind of

75
00:05:28.120 --> 00:05:32.399
leakage of warmth and heat. So I'm I'm actually in

76
00:05:32.480 --> 00:05:35.480
the greenhouse right now, and it's kind of warm in here,

77
00:05:35.519 --> 00:05:40.040
but and it's you know, it's overcasts, so there's there's

78
00:05:40.079 --> 00:05:44.240
definitely radiant energy coming in here. But the greenhouse has

79
00:05:44.279 --> 00:05:46.839
so many air holes in it that it doesn't really

80
00:05:49.480 --> 00:05:51.480
it doesn't really hold the heat in it as well

81
00:05:51.519 --> 00:05:54.720
as it probably needs to. But but I'm enjoying working

82
00:05:54.759 --> 00:05:59.800
on it. It's it's basically a brain tease and hopefully

83
00:05:59.800 --> 00:06:01.319
I can ended up and running here over the next

84
00:06:01.319 --> 00:06:04.439
couple of weeks, and I'll, like I said, I'll post

85
00:06:04.480 --> 00:06:07.959
some pictures of the progress that I'm making on this.

86
00:06:08.720 --> 00:06:10.920
I've invested quite a bit of money into it already.

87
00:06:11.360 --> 00:06:16.680
I've got I got power plugged into actually had an

88
00:06:16.680 --> 00:06:20.600
electrician come out and actually run power into the greenhouse.

89
00:06:20.720 --> 00:06:27.000
And I've got two significant circuits in here because I

90
00:06:27.079 --> 00:06:32.199
have very high powered lights that are hanging from the greenhouse,

91
00:06:32.279 --> 00:06:36.720
so in the darker, cooler months, I can have basically

92
00:06:36.720 --> 00:06:39.879
one hundred and twenty watts of lights or one hundred

93
00:06:40.839 --> 00:06:46.240
one two hundred watts of lights in here during the

94
00:06:46.240 --> 00:06:49.000
winter months to keep things warm and keep things growing.

95
00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:52.879
So it's it's exciting, but you I want to bore

96
00:06:52.879 --> 00:06:58.240
everybody to death here with my rant on aquaponics. But

97
00:06:58.360 --> 00:07:00.240
I will definitely keep you up to date. If you

98
00:07:00.279 --> 00:07:03.839
have an interest in hearing about certain aspects of what

99
00:07:03.879 --> 00:07:09.120
I built and about aquaponics, I just would do a

100
00:07:09.160 --> 00:07:14.319
search in in Bing or Google on the term aquaponics,

101
00:07:14.399 --> 00:07:17.920
and there's just a plethora of information out there if

102
00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:20.639
you want to look at maybe building your own home

103
00:07:20.680 --> 00:07:25.680
backyard system to grow your own produce, but it it

104
00:07:25.759 --> 00:07:29.480
does take some investment. And but there are some kind

105
00:07:29.480 --> 00:07:34.480
of simple startup systems that you can buy from from companies.

106
00:07:34.519 --> 00:07:41.560
There's one that's called the acoponicssource dot com and that's

107
00:07:41.720 --> 00:07:43.639
that's a good resource if you want to join a

108
00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:49.199
forum and talk about, you know, a system that you

109
00:07:49.279 --> 00:07:51.480
might want to build and learn from others. So I

110
00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:54.759
would definitely go do that. But I wanted to sign

111
00:07:54.800 --> 00:07:58.439
off from the first episode of the Rob Greenley My

112
00:07:58.480 --> 00:08:03.959
Digital Life podcast and go check out my website. I'll

113
00:08:04.040 --> 00:08:06.480
keep it up to date. Actually, I post on my website,

114
00:08:06.800 --> 00:08:10.800
probably mostly about podcasting, and I'll do that as well,

115
00:08:11.800 --> 00:08:16.759
but I'll ever so often I'll venture into other areas

116
00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:19.759
and hobbies and if I go to an event or

117
00:08:19.800 --> 00:08:23.519
something like that that is of interest, I'll definitely post

118
00:08:23.519 --> 00:08:28.360
it here as part of my audio podcast. So, like

119
00:08:28.399 --> 00:08:31.839
I said, thank you for downloading this. This is definitely

120
00:08:32.039 --> 00:08:36.759
an experiment, and shoot me an email Rob at Rob

121
00:08:36.799 --> 00:08:39.759
Greenley dot com and I would love to hear from you,

122
00:08:39.879 --> 00:08:43.320
and thank you so much for listening to this and

123
00:08:43.399 --> 00:08:45.759
downloading it. Take care, Bye bye
