You can build an extraordinary life while still being terrified you don’t belong in it.

Rudy Rush is proof.

After more than 30 years as a comedian, actor, radio personality and entertainer, with HBO, Showtime, Showtime at the Apollo and national radio on his résumé, Rudy revealed something during this conversation that stopped me in my tracks:

Some of the biggest accomplishments of his career happened with his confidence at just 2 out of 10. And then life forced him to rebuild.

After years of success came an overwhelming stretch of loss, uncertainty, career upheaval and financial instability. Somewhere in the process of starting over, Rudy began confronting the fear he'd carried with him for decades and finally recognizing his own worth.

In this episode of Quick Before You Forget, we talk about rebuilding confidence, overcoming fear, hitting rock bottom, knowing your worth, setting boundaries, trusting your gut and finding the courage to keep moving when the life you knew no longer looks the same.

Rudy shares what changed when he finally stopped worrying about who liked him, the career lesson that took him from $1,500 to $15,000 for the same work, why he says “Be fair, don’t be nice,” and the moment he realized he could finally say something that once made him deeply uncomfortable: “I am great.”

Because maybe confidence doesn't always come before the extraordinary thing. Sometimes you do the extraordinary thing scared. Again and again and again. You keep showing up. Until one day, you finally look back at everything you've survived, created and accomplished and realize: You've been proving you belong there all along.

1
00:00:00.120 --> 00:00:02.200
So every time I would go on stage top, I

2
00:00:02.319 --> 00:00:05.839
was like totally like I wasn't going through a fit,

3
00:00:05.919 --> 00:00:08.480
but I would have this fear like you know that

4
00:00:08.599 --> 00:00:13.000
shit fail, don't fail, don't fail. And now I don't

5
00:00:13.039 --> 00:00:16.280
feel it because of what I went through and what

6
00:00:16.359 --> 00:00:19.079
I went through, and what I'll tell people is sometimes

7
00:00:19.280 --> 00:00:22.600
hitting that rock bottom which I hit, made me have

8
00:00:22.760 --> 00:00:25.120
to be hungry again, had to make me start from

9
00:00:25.160 --> 00:00:26.079
the beginning again.

10
00:00:50.479 --> 00:00:54.200
Rudy Rush, Welcome to Quick before you forget hey.

11
00:00:53.960 --> 00:00:56.240
Thank you so much time. I'm glad to be here.

12
00:00:56.600 --> 00:00:59.240
I am so grateful you're here. And my friends have

13
00:00:59.320 --> 00:01:02.039
no idea how lucky they are that you're here with

14
00:01:02.119 --> 00:01:06.640
us today, guys. Rudy Rush is a comedian, actor, radio

15
00:01:06.680 --> 00:01:11.439
personality who has spent his life bringing energy, laughter, and

16
00:01:11.519 --> 00:01:16.120
connection to audiences across the country. From hosting on iHeartRadio

17
00:01:16.239 --> 00:01:19.359
to performing stand up and appearing on platforms like HBO

18
00:01:19.480 --> 00:01:23.920
and Showtime, He's built a career rooted in authenticity, resilience,

19
00:01:24.359 --> 00:01:28.680
and showing up fully as himself. But beyond the spotlight,

20
00:01:28.760 --> 00:01:32.120
Rudy's story is one of growth, perspective, and what it

21
00:01:32.159 --> 00:01:34.719
really means to stay true to who you are while

22
00:01:34.760 --> 00:01:39.159
chasing something bigger. I believe our story is our superpower, Rudy,

23
00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:40.799
and I'd like what I'd like to do with you

24
00:01:40.879 --> 00:01:45.439
today is walk through your story together, past, present and future,

25
00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:47.959
starting with the past. How does that sound?

26
00:01:48.359 --> 00:01:51.040
Well, you know, I actually promised this story to Ober,

27
00:01:51.120 --> 00:01:53.120
but I've told that I called it early toil. I'll

28
00:01:53.200 --> 00:01:55.840
get to tie. So she's okay, So let's let's let's

29
00:01:55.879 --> 00:01:56.439
move forward.

30
00:01:59.000 --> 00:02:03.439
Well, thank you? So I feel honored. My goodness, sir, Yeah,

31
00:02:03.799 --> 00:02:04.239
you might.

32
00:02:04.079 --> 00:02:05.760
Get a phone call in the two for bobile, but

33
00:02:05.840 --> 00:02:08.240
you know what hit the she approves of what.

34
00:02:08.120 --> 00:02:11.360
You're doing, beautiful. I appreciate her approval more than anything.

35
00:02:11.479 --> 00:02:15.319
So goodness. Well, I want to start with a quick

36
00:02:15.360 --> 00:02:18.759
before you forget question, So quick, before you forget, what

37
00:02:18.879 --> 00:02:21.639
is a moment from your childhood that stays with you

38
00:02:21.759 --> 00:02:23.560
and has become part of who you are?

39
00:02:25.199 --> 00:02:28.719
Wow? You know there's so many moments from me time. Honestly,

40
00:02:29.199 --> 00:02:33.439
I haven't vivid and you know, memory of even going

41
00:02:33.520 --> 00:02:36.080
far back is like being two and that last three

42
00:02:36.159 --> 00:02:38.840
years old, which a lot of people don't start remembering

43
00:02:38.919 --> 00:02:40.759
things from when they were like five six with them,

44
00:02:40.840 --> 00:02:43.520
But I remember the fourth grade. One thing that stood

45
00:02:43.560 --> 00:02:47.240
out that really resonated, even as kind as my you know,

46
00:02:47.719 --> 00:02:51.199
being fifty two. Like I remember the fourth grade, it

47
00:02:51.240 --> 00:02:54.319
was award ceremony time. It was like you know, class

48
00:02:54.360 --> 00:02:57.879
awards and Missus Greed. I went to Catholic school with

49
00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:00.240
Missus greed with with this what they would consider a

50
00:03:00.280 --> 00:03:02.759
late teacher, like people who were not nuns. So you

51
00:03:02.840 --> 00:03:04.919
had nouns who were teachers, and he had you know,

52
00:03:05.080 --> 00:03:07.439
regular teachers and they called them late teachers. But Ms

53
00:03:07.520 --> 00:03:10.479
Green a late teacher. My teacher in the fourth grade,

54
00:03:10.680 --> 00:03:13.319
she was given out award. She had signed social studies

55
00:03:13.319 --> 00:03:16.919
to know them and on time. The craziest things she

56
00:03:17.080 --> 00:03:21.960
did she gave me an award for dancing. And let

57
00:03:21.960 --> 00:03:23.879
me just tell you right now, if you think I'm

58
00:03:23.879 --> 00:03:28.520
a dancer, your absolutely wrong. Oh no dancing skills whatsoever.

59
00:03:28.599 --> 00:03:31.840
But we did have like a dance party. And when

60
00:03:31.960 --> 00:03:35.120
things are brought to a level of fun, that's where

61
00:03:35.159 --> 00:03:38.520
I found to show out and show up. So there

62
00:03:38.560 --> 00:03:42.159
was something that I did. Even my classmates who saw

63
00:03:42.240 --> 00:03:44.400
me get the award, they were bad and they were

64
00:03:44.439 --> 00:03:50.000
like totally in agreeance. And you know, it's funny that

65
00:03:50.479 --> 00:03:53.360
later on in life, that was probably the first person

66
00:03:53.360 --> 00:03:57.599
who saw me saw my capability for being, you know,

67
00:03:57.680 --> 00:04:02.120
a very good entertainer and just having that spirit to

68
00:04:02.199 --> 00:04:05.159
bring something different to the situation. So she saw me

69
00:04:05.319 --> 00:04:09.800
and I recognized that, and I've always kept me like,

70
00:04:10.080 --> 00:04:14.080
you know, being proud because I wasn't a scholastic student.

71
00:04:14.080 --> 00:04:16.240
I would always pass my test. I always made decent

72
00:04:16.279 --> 00:04:20.360
grades enough to pass, but I was very you know,

73
00:04:20.720 --> 00:04:24.560
just excitable about having fun and making sure everybody was involved.

74
00:04:24.600 --> 00:04:26.639
I think that's what she kind of recognized to me.

75
00:04:26.959 --> 00:04:29.600
So that's one of the moments that stars out the most.

76
00:04:30.240 --> 00:04:31.279
She made you feel seen.

77
00:04:32.040 --> 00:04:35.680
No, she really did. And you know, this bothering pieces

78
00:04:35.720 --> 00:04:38.560
to the story that goes in to who I am today,

79
00:04:38.720 --> 00:04:40.560
you know, Like you know, I went home and got

80
00:04:40.639 --> 00:04:43.639
trouble for having the awards. So that's just the kind

81
00:04:43.680 --> 00:04:46.839
of like paradox is like it's shifted, you know. So

82
00:04:47.319 --> 00:04:49.959
if you know, that's a part of my career who

83
00:04:49.959 --> 00:04:52.279
I am as a person, just to kind of you know,

84
00:04:52.399 --> 00:04:53.920
I can do all of these things, but there's a

85
00:04:53.959 --> 00:04:57.040
shy level and there's you know, there's a little you know,

86
00:04:57.959 --> 00:05:01.800
raking through barriers myself, even my latest stages in my career,

87
00:05:01.879 --> 00:05:05.279
and even now learning new things about myself to move forward.

88
00:05:05.360 --> 00:05:07.040
So it all started them for me.

89
00:05:07.639 --> 00:05:11.000
So how do you break through the shyness? Because I don't.

90
00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:14.000
You don't strike me as a very shy person at all.

91
00:05:14.560 --> 00:05:16.759
Yeah, you know, I gotta I gotta figure out the

92
00:05:16.879 --> 00:05:19.240
turn because there's a word for it, and I should

93
00:05:19.240 --> 00:05:22.360
have researched it before we had this conversation. But I

94
00:05:22.360 --> 00:05:25.439
would tell you exactly what it is, ty, it's it's

95
00:05:25.759 --> 00:05:28.959
it's an introvert mixed with an extroverted person. It's a

96
00:05:28.959 --> 00:05:31.639
word for it. You may know it. But basically, what

97
00:05:31.720 --> 00:05:35.279
I can do is have the capacity to be in

98
00:05:35.319 --> 00:05:38.240
front of thousands, and I'm talking about I've done the

99
00:05:38.240 --> 00:05:41.439
Toyota Center the fifties, said that tree Port with with

100
00:05:41.600 --> 00:05:45.480
everybody from Chappelle, Schaltz and Cat Williams. I actually hosted

101
00:05:45.839 --> 00:05:48.759
the event and I can be around hundreds and thousands

102
00:05:48.759 --> 00:05:53.399
of people, take pitches, shake hands, everything. But when it's

103
00:05:53.480 --> 00:05:56.800
all setting done by everybody's going off to the after party,

104
00:05:57.519 --> 00:06:01.600
I'm just going to decompress. Need to be by myself.

105
00:06:01.639 --> 00:06:06.120
It's no ritual, no shower to be taken. I may

106
00:06:06.120 --> 00:06:07.319
take a shower, you know what I mean to do

107
00:06:07.319 --> 00:06:09.360
the regular things before you go to bed. There's no

108
00:06:09.600 --> 00:06:12.519
like panic button that I'm rushing off and just kind

109
00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:15.639
of do that. It's just that I feel more comfortable

110
00:06:16.079 --> 00:06:19.040
in my own space. So I'm not a party god,

111
00:06:19.319 --> 00:06:22.199
but I can be around a million people who are

112
00:06:22.240 --> 00:06:22.959
ready to party.

113
00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:26.879
Well, you bring energy to the room, you know, you

114
00:06:26.920 --> 00:06:29.600
bring energy to the room, but also for a living

115
00:06:29.759 --> 00:06:33.839
like you are an energy igniter, an energy infuser, and

116
00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:37.800
energy like in person. So how do you protect your

117
00:06:37.920 --> 00:06:42.279
energy when you're not on stage or performing Because you're

118
00:06:42.279 --> 00:06:44.839
the person that people seek it from, So how do

119
00:06:44.879 --> 00:06:46.800
you keep your energy clear?

120
00:06:47.360 --> 00:06:50.600
So basically, you know, it's not thinking more like you know,

121
00:06:50.680 --> 00:06:53.480
some people do different things to just kind of collect

122
00:06:53.519 --> 00:06:56.839
themselves and reconnect. You know, some people like can with

123
00:06:56.959 --> 00:07:00.600
other people, like having a simple brand deep meat personally,

124
00:07:00.800 --> 00:07:03.240
like you know, I kind of since COVID, you know,

125
00:07:03.319 --> 00:07:05.959
there was a series of events that took place that

126
00:07:06.040 --> 00:07:09.680
led me to this moment and it really helped me

127
00:07:09.759 --> 00:07:14.639
after twenty eight years of nothing really going totally wronged,

128
00:07:15.240 --> 00:07:18.120
everything just hit the kitchen singing one time. So it

129
00:07:18.199 --> 00:07:21.040
really helped me to realize who I am. So, you know,

130
00:07:21.240 --> 00:07:24.560
we have our phones that have all these different moments. Now.

131
00:07:25.399 --> 00:07:28.319
You know, before we used to have these little photo albums.

132
00:07:28.439 --> 00:07:30.519
So I thought to like my mental photo album, and

133
00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:32.199
I think of all of the great things that I

134
00:07:32.240 --> 00:07:35.240
did throughout my career, the times that I made people

135
00:07:35.360 --> 00:07:38.160
really happy, or I just changed the whole you know,

136
00:07:38.759 --> 00:07:41.639
made a thousand or more people at one time feel

137
00:07:41.720 --> 00:07:46.360
one way. It's you know, and I look into myself

138
00:07:46.439 --> 00:07:48.560
and then I try to just use that to be like, hey,

139
00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:51.319
you you're on the right track. You've done some great things.

140
00:07:51.639 --> 00:07:54.360
It's always been in the betterment of everybody. And you

141
00:07:54.519 --> 00:07:57.120
have to take some credit where I never gave myself

142
00:07:57.199 --> 00:08:00.000
credit for that before I escaped all the other elem

143
00:08:00.079 --> 00:08:02.199
this right, but I had to take some myself. So

144
00:08:02.279 --> 00:08:02.959
that's what I do.

145
00:08:05.120 --> 00:08:07.759
You said that the audience connects with you, and I've

146
00:08:07.759 --> 00:08:10.160
actually had the blessing and honor of seeing it happen

147
00:08:10.240 --> 00:08:13.600
in real time once that long ago. I'm very grateful

148
00:08:13.600 --> 00:08:16.759
for that experience, because you do just you do very

149
00:08:16.759 --> 00:08:20.079
well connect with the audience, and I'm wondering how that

150
00:08:20.120 --> 00:08:23.600
feels for you when you know that you're connecting with

151
00:08:23.759 --> 00:08:27.959
them as opposed to entertaining them.

152
00:08:27.959 --> 00:08:31.800
I know I'm connecting most of the time. It usually

153
00:08:31.879 --> 00:08:35.480
happens after the show, but honestly, I always tell people

154
00:08:35.480 --> 00:08:37.679
because they usually come up to me afterwards. I thank

155
00:08:37.720 --> 00:08:40.399
them for the energy because I tend to sometimes if

156
00:08:40.440 --> 00:08:42.919
I have an audience, when I can look around up

157
00:08:42.960 --> 00:08:45.080
and connect with a few people, like when I tell

158
00:08:45.120 --> 00:08:47.799
some of my jokes and I'm living through this experience,

159
00:08:47.840 --> 00:08:51.679
which is usually a story that I've created, I can

160
00:08:51.840 --> 00:08:54.919
see the passion and the energy like, oh man, how

161
00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:58.000
is there that's happened to me too? So they actually

162
00:08:58.200 --> 00:09:00.759
thank them. I said, thanks for that energy. I kept coming,

163
00:09:00.799 --> 00:09:02.519
you know, I keep coming to some people will not

164
00:09:02.600 --> 00:09:06.000
see them in the audience, and it took totally like engaged,

165
00:09:06.120 --> 00:09:09.000
and I'm like, Okay, that's my guy, that's my girl

166
00:09:09.080 --> 00:09:11.480
right this. So I kind of up and it brings

167
00:09:11.559 --> 00:09:15.480
everybody to this table. We're all just having this conversation.

168
00:09:15.960 --> 00:09:17.759
I don't care if it's one hundred and fifty or

169
00:09:17.840 --> 00:09:20.519
like I said before, sometimes it's a thousand and So,

170
00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:25.039
you know, that's that's one thing that I'm most proud

171
00:09:25.080 --> 00:09:27.879
of that I can get people to always come to

172
00:09:27.919 --> 00:09:30.399
me after this show or even during the show, and

173
00:09:30.480 --> 00:09:32.840
they can feel connected to what I'm saying, because it's

174
00:09:32.879 --> 00:09:34.559
all relatable things that I talk.

175
00:09:35.960 --> 00:09:39.639
So when you talk about the journey that you've had

176
00:09:39.679 --> 00:09:42.320
in your career, obviously that's a big difference of one

177
00:09:42.399 --> 00:09:44.360
hundred and fifty people or a thousand people or more

178
00:09:44.399 --> 00:09:48.080
than that. Can you walk us through how you went

179
00:09:48.200 --> 00:09:51.919
from the fourth grader that got that honor to be

180
00:09:51.960 --> 00:09:57.240
the best dnswer to today because there's a lot there obviously,

181
00:09:57.279 --> 00:09:59.759
And you said you had twenty eight years before all

182
00:09:59.759 --> 00:10:01.600
the thing happened at once, But I want to I

183
00:10:01.600 --> 00:10:03.159
want to learn a little bit more about that twenty

184
00:10:03.200 --> 00:10:06.559
eight years. But then also you know, what did like,

185
00:10:06.639 --> 00:10:08.759
what happened like? And how do we how do we

186
00:10:08.799 --> 00:10:09.720
bounce forward from it?

187
00:10:09.799 --> 00:10:12.519
Yeah? And yeah, but you know, and it's better for me.

188
00:10:12.759 --> 00:10:15.000
I guess it's born therapeutic for me to talk about it.

189
00:10:15.080 --> 00:10:17.080
So later I will, I will. I don't mind talking

190
00:10:17.120 --> 00:10:19.480
about what happened because maybe it can help some people,

191
00:10:19.519 --> 00:10:22.840
because you know, everyone tends to think that everything just

192
00:10:22.879 --> 00:10:25.200
happens to them, so maybe hearing my story will give

193
00:10:25.320 --> 00:10:28.559
some insight to how someone else can navigate outside of

194
00:10:28.600 --> 00:10:33.360
their story. So but for me, initially, always like I said,

195
00:10:33.480 --> 00:10:36.679
from fourth grade and before that and after I've always

196
00:10:36.720 --> 00:10:38.759
been kind of like the life of the party, someone

197
00:10:38.799 --> 00:10:41.799
who breaks a different energy to the room. I had

198
00:10:41.919 --> 00:10:44.840
some junior ice teachers who I'm very close to to

199
00:10:44.879 --> 00:10:49.399
this day. Uh you know, just think about teaching in

200
00:10:49.440 --> 00:10:53.879
the inner city, and you know, one is one gentleman,

201
00:10:53.919 --> 00:10:56.799
he's Jewish, the other woman she's Catholic. But you know,

202
00:10:56.919 --> 00:11:00.279
you have two people who are you know, white in

203
00:11:00.320 --> 00:11:03.639
the inner City of Calling York Spanish homes and being

204
00:11:03.720 --> 00:11:07.000
zach and they're teaching these kids from all these different backgrounds,

205
00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:10.759
from abusive parents, that truck addicts, and you know, we

206
00:11:10.840 --> 00:11:16.039
all had a diverse class of different status. Some people

207
00:11:16.279 --> 00:11:18.559
had working parents and people have parents who didn't work.

208
00:11:19.039 --> 00:11:22.679
But to have all these kids on one accord and

209
00:11:22.759 --> 00:11:25.679
they credited me for that situation. They said I gave

210
00:11:25.720 --> 00:11:28.360
them the best three years of teaching that they've ever had.

211
00:11:28.399 --> 00:11:32.399
Because my thing was we never left anybody behind. If

212
00:11:32.440 --> 00:11:35.639
there was people who were poor and didn't have the clothing,

213
00:11:35.879 --> 00:11:39.120
or someone who was socially awkward, I would always make

214
00:11:39.639 --> 00:11:41.759
a point that my fool friends, if you want to

215
00:11:41.759 --> 00:11:43.799
be friends with me, you got to be friends with

216
00:11:43.879 --> 00:11:47.639
him and with herds. And that really it led to

217
00:11:47.799 --> 00:11:51.759
no major conflict in those three years that I was

218
00:11:51.759 --> 00:11:54.159
in the school in those teachers. So that was the beginning.

219
00:11:54.679 --> 00:11:56.759
Then later on in life, I went to high school.

220
00:11:57.080 --> 00:11:58.759
Some things happened in my life where I had to

221
00:11:58.799 --> 00:12:01.240
go to South Carolina to Charleston, to being exact, to

222
00:12:01.279 --> 00:12:04.240
live with my art for three years, and I went

223
00:12:04.240 --> 00:12:07.639
to school, graduated, and played high school basketball, which was great.

224
00:12:07.720 --> 00:12:10.320
There was an awesome experience for me. Then I came

225
00:12:10.360 --> 00:12:13.320
back to New York City worked at a law firm

226
00:12:13.440 --> 00:12:17.200
Philip maybe less than a year and a half before

227
00:12:17.360 --> 00:12:21.360
being discovered by a woman named Dinnie Leasey who's got

228
00:12:21.399 --> 00:12:23.279
rest her and she's no longer with us, but she

229
00:12:23.360 --> 00:12:26.600
was a huge entertainment fan and she was inter Stanley

230
00:12:26.679 --> 00:12:29.080
too cheap but his career first started. She's like, he's

231
00:12:29.120 --> 00:12:30.679
going to be a big star, and I know you're

232
00:12:30.720 --> 00:12:32.679
going to be a big star. So she bain me

233
00:12:32.759 --> 00:12:35.679
go on an audition for a Living color and actually

234
00:12:35.720 --> 00:12:39.639
got about four callbacks and they decided abo to continue

235
00:12:39.679 --> 00:12:42.240
with the show. But you know, I felt that I

236
00:12:42.320 --> 00:12:45.799
was talented, and one guys from my job, Richie Simmons,

237
00:12:45.799 --> 00:12:48.320
he signed me up for Invage and Night hit New

238
00:12:48.399 --> 00:12:50.799
York at the New York Comedy Club, and from that

239
00:12:50.960 --> 00:12:54.159
moment you had to bring three paid customers in order

240
00:12:54.200 --> 00:12:56.480
to get on stage. So many people from my job

241
00:12:56.519 --> 00:12:58.639
and my family though I was funny to this day

242
00:12:58.679 --> 00:13:02.279
if they still keep the wreck. Ninety something people came

243
00:13:02.360 --> 00:13:06.120
to city my first night, and so that started my

244
00:13:06.240 --> 00:13:08.360
career and I was just off to the races from

245
00:13:08.360 --> 00:13:13.080
there's time how fun Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.

246
00:13:13.120 --> 00:13:16.600
And it makes me curious. I wonder what people get wrong,

247
00:13:16.720 --> 00:13:22.679
Like what's the most common misconception about being the funny one?

248
00:13:22.919 --> 00:13:26.120
Yeah, you know, I think being an entertainer when people

249
00:13:26.159 --> 00:13:28.759
because I had the same misconceptions too, so I'm able

250
00:13:28.799 --> 00:13:31.399
to like think you would a grindes salt. I don't

251
00:13:31.399 --> 00:13:34.080
get offended. I don't feel like, you know, somebody's making

252
00:13:34.080 --> 00:13:36.159
their own assumption. I'll tell you this time. When I

253
00:13:36.200 --> 00:13:39.320
used to watch something as simple as deaf comedy Jam,

254
00:13:39.360 --> 00:13:41.519
when I before I even started into a comedy, was

255
00:13:41.559 --> 00:13:46.000
such a huge phenomena. And then finally get a chance

256
00:13:46.039 --> 00:13:48.399
to meet the man and women who actually, you know,

257
00:13:48.879 --> 00:13:51.399
formed on that show. I felt that they were filthy rich,

258
00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:56.080
you know, eat grapes every day and not knowing they

259
00:13:56.159 --> 00:14:00.279
all gone, you know, like it was a there's a

260
00:14:00.320 --> 00:14:02.639
shot to find out that, you know, like they work

261
00:14:02.840 --> 00:14:05.519
just like you and on everything is a job, your

262
00:14:05.559 --> 00:14:09.440
famed acting actress, you know, even you know, there's exceptions

263
00:14:09.440 --> 00:14:13.240
to every role. There's Dicaprios, and there's Denzel Washington's and

264
00:14:13.279 --> 00:14:15.559
there's the Meryll Street. They made lots of money, but

265
00:14:15.679 --> 00:14:19.399
damn issues too. They have family problems or whatever. But

266
00:14:19.480 --> 00:14:21.679
I'm just talking. As you peel the layers back and

267
00:14:21.720 --> 00:14:24.399
you go a little further down the tot them boats,

268
00:14:24.600 --> 00:14:26.360
we're all pretty much the same. But I had to

269
00:14:26.440 --> 00:14:29.360
learn that lesson quickly when I did def Comedy Jam

270
00:14:29.559 --> 00:14:32.600
just at the age of twenty one, which is very

271
00:14:32.759 --> 00:14:35.559
very rare for a comedian in the first year to

272
00:14:35.639 --> 00:14:39.879
have their existence to be on a bronze show like that.

273
00:14:40.720 --> 00:14:43.879
That check was ain't dollars and they took almost have

274
00:14:44.039 --> 00:14:48.039
them and and they got there wasn't a you know,

275
00:14:48.480 --> 00:14:53.639
a group of attorneys and agents knocking at my doors.

276
00:14:53.720 --> 00:14:56.159
So I had to work eeping harder after I did

277
00:14:56.279 --> 00:14:57.320
my Table Visions spot.

278
00:14:57.399 --> 00:15:02.320
So yeah, basically, well that's interesting that you you would

279
00:15:02.360 --> 00:15:04.559
think that, you know, that was the big break and

280
00:15:04.600 --> 00:15:07.399
then it wasn't. In the way that you thought it was.

281
00:15:07.759 --> 00:15:09.960
But I'm wondering how how it did how it did

282
00:15:10.039 --> 00:15:12.039
serve you, Like, how how did it make you better

283
00:15:12.080 --> 00:15:14.960
to have that big, huge opportunity so so quickly.

284
00:15:15.600 --> 00:15:19.879
Well, it let me know that Belonged didn't have to

285
00:15:20.440 --> 00:15:23.639
like some of my contemporaries with some of my peers, uh,

286
00:15:23.840 --> 00:15:26.440
you know, having some great success right now, this is

287
00:15:26.480 --> 00:15:28.840
a very good time for a lot of people who

288
00:15:29.159 --> 00:15:31.559
you know, didn't quite have the blessings that I had

289
00:15:31.600 --> 00:15:36.039
early on that they're living a fantastic uh you know,

290
00:15:36.440 --> 00:15:39.080
you know, they they stayed the course of them benefiting

291
00:15:39.399 --> 00:15:41.440
from being in the business among what I had the

292
00:15:41.559 --> 00:15:44.720
benefit of being like, you know, almost what you would

293
00:15:44.720 --> 00:15:47.080
call them a pheenoem you know, straight out of high

294
00:15:47.080 --> 00:15:51.879
school and into the pros type of situation. And so yeah,

295
00:15:52.080 --> 00:15:54.759
how you know it just it let me know that

296
00:15:54.840 --> 00:15:58.080
I belonged. I kept my job for at least another

297
00:15:58.200 --> 00:16:00.440
year and a half before I made you often did

298
00:16:00.519 --> 00:16:05.039
comedy folds hame. So just imagine being from the mailroom

299
00:16:05.080 --> 00:16:07.840
and now everybody sees you on HBO and you're coming

300
00:16:07.879 --> 00:16:10.639
into the office and the partners in the farm and

301
00:16:10.679 --> 00:16:13.320
everybody like, oh, we watched you last night. So like

302
00:16:13.559 --> 00:16:16.639
I was almost celebrity within my own building in midtown

303
00:16:16.720 --> 00:16:21.000
man Hattan. So free munch, you know, you know, the

304
00:16:21.120 --> 00:16:26.799
ladies walked kind of like twenty one.

305
00:16:28.240 --> 00:16:31.840
So to the extent that you're comfortable, you know, we did.

306
00:16:31.960 --> 00:16:34.240
You did say a couple of times now about like

307
00:16:34.279 --> 00:16:36.600
the heart the hard stuff that happened all at once

308
00:16:36.639 --> 00:16:38.039
that might be relatable for people.

309
00:16:38.679 --> 00:16:39.600
What can you.

310
00:16:39.559 --> 00:16:41.320
Tell us about that? Like I say, like, what to

311
00:16:41.639 --> 00:16:43.639
the level that you're comfortable talking about it. I do

312
00:16:43.720 --> 00:16:47.240
think people learn from each other's hard things. So can

313
00:16:47.279 --> 00:16:48.000
you walk us through that?

314
00:16:48.639 --> 00:16:52.039
So there's a there's a piece of comfort that comes

315
00:16:52.039 --> 00:16:56.759
along with uh, you know, just life in general. Life. So,

316
00:16:56.879 --> 00:16:59.159
like I said, twenty eight years from the time I

317
00:16:59.200 --> 00:17:03.320
started doing comedy, you know, I was very blessed. You know,

318
00:17:03.840 --> 00:17:06.200
he can magic being twenty one and twenty two years

319
00:17:06.200 --> 00:17:09.200
old making a six figure salary at a time where

320
00:17:09.359 --> 00:17:12.160
six figure salary is much different than today, like you

321
00:17:12.200 --> 00:17:15.279
know what I mean. Like so I felt like that,

322
00:17:15.480 --> 00:17:17.559
not like a millionaire, but I was able to, like,

323
00:17:17.680 --> 00:17:19.599
you know, take care of my family, take care of

324
00:17:19.640 --> 00:17:23.519
bills and stuff. So I got into national radio, and

325
00:17:24.880 --> 00:17:28.160
it seemed like a lot of great things were happen,

326
00:17:28.400 --> 00:17:33.000
and then COVID came, and then COVID came a great

327
00:17:33.240 --> 00:17:36.480
a great deal of trial and tribulation. But my father

328
00:17:36.599 --> 00:17:40.279
passed right before COVID in November of twenty nineteen, so

329
00:17:40.319 --> 00:17:43.279
that was the beginning and taking care of him for

330
00:17:43.279 --> 00:17:46.000
about four and a half years. He had alzheimer and dementia,

331
00:17:46.119 --> 00:17:48.920
and so it was four gone. It was we knew

332
00:17:48.960 --> 00:17:51.319
that there would be a point where he would probably

333
00:17:51.519 --> 00:17:54.599
not be with us, but you know, that's where that started.

334
00:17:54.640 --> 00:17:58.400
Then of course COVID hit and the you know, the

335
00:17:58.440 --> 00:18:02.240
isolation of being you know, in a thing, the pandemic

336
00:18:02.279 --> 00:18:05.079
and having to you know, stay at home and things

337
00:18:05.079 --> 00:18:09.480
of that nature. Then I lost my radio contract after

338
00:18:09.680 --> 00:18:13.039
years of doing radio at the number one spot on

339
00:18:13.119 --> 00:18:15.480
any show that I was only it seemed like my

340
00:18:15.599 --> 00:18:18.160
trajectory was going out of the roof. They would take

341
00:18:18.200 --> 00:18:20.559
it off. Shows like Steve Clarbing took place, and with

342
00:18:20.720 --> 00:18:24.599
my life, that's that's the level I was on prior

343
00:18:24.640 --> 00:18:27.880
to that, and so it was some It was some

344
00:18:28.000 --> 00:18:30.839
issues at work because there was a situation with a

345
00:18:30.880 --> 00:18:34.079
new cast member that didn't work out really well. So

346
00:18:34.160 --> 00:18:36.519
I was moved to another show. And then once by

347
00:18:36.599 --> 00:18:39.079
contractors up they were paying a lot of money and

348
00:18:39.079 --> 00:18:42.400
they were like, hey, we're pleading because of you know, COVID.

349
00:18:42.400 --> 00:18:46.079
So I lost my contract and that began the spiral

350
00:18:46.279 --> 00:18:49.759
of why the world is still closed. I can't just

351
00:18:49.839 --> 00:18:52.160
be the comedian it's about and get on the tour,

352
00:18:52.319 --> 00:18:55.519
go do some dans or create anything. Everything is still closed.

353
00:18:55.559 --> 00:18:59.240
Where am I gonna find money? Then that spiraled into

354
00:18:59.559 --> 00:19:02.559
my own this daughter who was at fourteen at the time,

355
00:19:02.680 --> 00:19:05.759
her mother passed away in June of twenty twenty one,

356
00:19:06.240 --> 00:19:10.480
which began a different responsibility. Has always been involved, but

357
00:19:10.519 --> 00:19:14.519
now I have to be this custodial you know, single pairing,

358
00:19:15.039 --> 00:19:18.759
and that kind of challenges as well. Because she was fourteen,

359
00:19:19.119 --> 00:19:21.119
she didn't want to leave her home time, She had

360
00:19:21.160 --> 00:19:24.119
people pulling her in on these different directions. It was

361
00:19:24.319 --> 00:19:27.319
very a tough period. And then you know, not to

362
00:19:27.400 --> 00:19:30.759
mention I was in a failed relationship prior to that,

363
00:19:30.839 --> 00:19:33.599
so it was so loud, like I said, you know,

364
00:19:33.680 --> 00:19:37.960
when you're used to making a very high and six

365
00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:41.559
figures to making absolutely nothing. I mean you're living off

366
00:19:41.599 --> 00:19:46.759
of you know, all your money needs going to child's report,

367
00:19:47.000 --> 00:19:49.640
your children, which is fine, but at the same time,

368
00:19:49.759 --> 00:19:53.000
like you're just living beneath your you know, your usual

369
00:19:53.039 --> 00:19:55.920
way of living. And I've never lived high on the hall,

370
00:19:56.039 --> 00:19:58.359
but never had like the fancy coughs. It's just I

371
00:19:58.400 --> 00:20:00.400
had enough to do things, but I met I didn't

372
00:20:00.400 --> 00:20:03.680
have anything. And when I say anything, like I had

373
00:20:03.680 --> 00:20:06.759
to make choices like am I lether? Like being in.

374
00:20:06.880 --> 00:20:13.359
Diet was getting serious, you know, and so it was

375
00:20:13.440 --> 00:20:15.519
tough and it helped me understand that, you know, like

376
00:20:15.640 --> 00:20:17.079
a lot of people are going through that.

377
00:20:17.160 --> 00:20:20.720
But you know, I'm not ashamed to say this. I

378
00:20:20.839 --> 00:20:25.680
never felt uncomfortable about, you know, my mortality or whatever

379
00:20:25.839 --> 00:20:30.119
until this period. Like I never felt like going off

380
00:20:30.160 --> 00:20:33.279
the edge, but I can understand people who have that.

381
00:20:33.519 --> 00:20:35.960
For me was a lot. It was an emotional time

382
00:20:36.319 --> 00:20:38.400
where for me, I had to kind of, you know,

383
00:20:39.079 --> 00:20:42.440
think about my children, think about the love for myself honestly,

384
00:20:42.839 --> 00:20:44.759
and be like you're gonna be fine, You're gonna get

385
00:20:44.759 --> 00:20:47.079
through this out, and think you can just crumble because

386
00:20:47.160 --> 00:20:49.519
things are not working out in your face, but you know,

387
00:20:49.799 --> 00:20:52.920
just just barely making the red tie, just barely, like

388
00:20:53.400 --> 00:20:55.960
you know, like now I'm looking at the back of

389
00:20:56.000 --> 00:20:58.200
the tag on the groceries. I'm like, don't count, you know,

390
00:20:58.279 --> 00:21:02.000
my mind like this and I got thirty something dollars

391
00:21:02.000 --> 00:21:03.759
and I can get bread, and I can get this

392
00:21:03.880 --> 00:21:06.119
and I can make it. Got and then I've had

393
00:21:06.200 --> 00:21:10.920
that in my adult life until I'm forty gizon It's crazy.

394
00:21:11.240 --> 00:21:13.640
And so yeah, so it was. It was a rough

395
00:21:13.680 --> 00:21:16.279
time and you know, we're still coming through it, but

396
00:21:16.480 --> 00:21:19.480
there was great things now. So that's that's the blessing

397
00:21:19.880 --> 00:21:21.559
Stephen Waiting sticking.

398
00:21:21.319 --> 00:21:24.640
With it, and you kind of you scratched the surface.

399
00:21:24.680 --> 00:21:27.039
I think of the question that was coming into my

400
00:21:27.079 --> 00:21:29.440
head while you were sharing that, And thank you for sharing,

401
00:21:29.799 --> 00:21:31.559
because I think that there's a lot of people that

402
00:21:31.920 --> 00:21:36.160
have had a lot of combinations of things happen. You know,

403
00:21:36.200 --> 00:21:38.880
they say bad things happen in threes. Well, it's been

404
00:21:39.000 --> 00:21:43.319
like thirteen s lately for most people, right, So thank

405
00:21:43.359 --> 00:21:47.680
you for sharing the details. But also I feel like

406
00:21:47.799 --> 00:21:50.920
there's something there when you started to talk about your

407
00:21:51.000 --> 00:21:54.759
kids and like the reasons that you kept going, what

408
00:21:55.000 --> 00:21:57.640
kept you going when things felt so dark.

409
00:21:58.480 --> 00:22:01.599
Well it kept me, you know, but my desire to

410
00:22:01.640 --> 00:22:06.839
be a good father and you know, the saddest part

411
00:22:06.880 --> 00:22:08.880
about it, and I don't want to place any blame.

412
00:22:09.000 --> 00:22:11.480
You know, people get emotional on you say things you

413
00:22:11.559 --> 00:22:14.400
feel a certain way, and when you're impair against as

414
00:22:14.440 --> 00:22:18.559
you know, it's like, you know, even when you get

415
00:22:18.599 --> 00:22:24.119
married for twenty years, there's a small competition and then

416
00:22:24.160 --> 00:22:26.319
that felt petition. You know, you want to be your

417
00:22:26.359 --> 00:22:29.440
child's favorite, especially when their little babies. You say, mommy,

418
00:22:29.519 --> 00:22:33.039
friends and daddy first. But you know, if there's a split,

419
00:22:33.519 --> 00:22:36.559
sometimes you can get a little ugly. And you know,

420
00:22:36.759 --> 00:22:40.480
sometimes it's quiet, sometimes it's loud. Some things have been done,

421
00:22:40.680 --> 00:22:43.599
you know, but I can tell you from from my perspective,

422
00:22:43.720 --> 00:22:47.000
my father wasn't spoken highly of, and you know, my

423
00:22:47.599 --> 00:22:49.880
sister and I had to come to the realization that

424
00:22:49.920 --> 00:22:52.400
we have two different opinions of who our father is.

425
00:22:52.720 --> 00:22:55.240
And my child with my dad allowed me to see

426
00:22:55.720 --> 00:22:58.839
him from a different perspective, will help me. Allowed, you know,

427
00:22:58.920 --> 00:23:02.640
allowed me to be more understanding of how difficult it

428
00:23:02.720 --> 00:23:05.799
is being a parent. Let the moment may so and

429
00:23:05.839 --> 00:23:09.039
then everything that he's done, I did the opposite, Todd,

430
00:23:09.160 --> 00:23:11.799
and I'm in the same place. I'm being you know,

431
00:23:12.119 --> 00:23:15.759
considered this and considered that lies are being told, things

432
00:23:15.759 --> 00:23:18.240
are being spreading about you know, so that was the

433
00:23:18.319 --> 00:23:23.319
toughest thing, you know, as a father. I really and

434
00:23:23.440 --> 00:23:26.240
I'm still going through some issues with you know, the oldest.

435
00:23:26.279 --> 00:23:29.160
You know, when they're teenagers, they they go through this period.

436
00:23:29.200 --> 00:23:31.240
But now I had a teenager who has lost the

437
00:23:31.359 --> 00:23:34.880
parent and they have all these other entities and thought

438
00:23:34.960 --> 00:23:37.319
to their mind of how they want their life to be.

439
00:23:37.559 --> 00:23:39.759
But I have to be the dad. I have to

440
00:23:39.799 --> 00:23:42.160
be the structure. I have to be the one that

441
00:23:42.240 --> 00:23:45.599
says no, and that's not very well received. So we're

442
00:23:45.599 --> 00:23:47.559
going through that period. And I have a yell one

443
00:23:47.559 --> 00:23:51.359
who's turned in ten, and you know, the relationship over

444
00:23:51.400 --> 00:23:56.279
there has not been the best, which you know, sometimes

445
00:23:56.279 --> 00:23:58.000
you can shake your and and say you don't know why.

446
00:23:58.160 --> 00:24:01.200
But at the same time, like I said, for my children,

447
00:24:01.440 --> 00:24:03.440
I've always thought my God's wand to be like this

448
00:24:03.559 --> 00:24:05.960
green dad, I feel like I am and I have

449
00:24:06.000 --> 00:24:07.720
to stick to that. And that's something I have to

450
00:24:07.799 --> 00:24:10.640
tell myself because it gets hard sometimes, like man, you

451
00:24:10.680 --> 00:24:13.839
did you mess up? Where did you mess up? Like that?

452
00:24:14.000 --> 00:24:15.799
You know some things it feels like nobody wants to

453
00:24:15.839 --> 00:24:18.480
talk to you, or nobody wants to you know, be

454
00:24:18.599 --> 00:24:21.920
like haye, dad, you know, and you see people on TV,

455
00:24:22.200 --> 00:24:24.200
or you see people in your neighborhood, or you or

456
00:24:24.200 --> 00:24:26.359
I may be women who just feeling that their fault

457
00:24:26.440 --> 00:24:29.440
is the greatest thing in the world. You know, I

458
00:24:29.559 --> 00:24:32.519
want that, and I for some reason, you know, I

459
00:24:32.519 --> 00:24:34.440
feel like I did everything to get that fight you

460
00:24:34.480 --> 00:24:37.960
get nowhere. So it's tough, but I'm here for it.

461
00:24:38.359 --> 00:24:39.200
I'm built for it.

462
00:24:40.640 --> 00:24:43.920
Well, what as being a parent taught you about yourself?

463
00:24:46.000 --> 00:24:51.880
You know this, you know, the big fighty thing. And

464
00:24:51.920 --> 00:24:54.240
I'll wuld be a comedian when I say this, but like,

465
00:24:54.279 --> 00:24:57.559
the funniest thing I learned is actually, like you know,

466
00:24:58.119 --> 00:24:59.759
you know, I have to tell this joke a bump

467
00:24:59.799 --> 00:25:02.519
bu father not being around, which he was and so

468
00:25:03.079 --> 00:25:06.720
but you know it is a jill in a sense

469
00:25:06.759 --> 00:25:08.960
where you know he could have been around a lot more,

470
00:25:09.079 --> 00:25:11.359
but let's just say he wasn't. And I would tell

471
00:25:11.400 --> 00:25:13.920
this Joe black Man, he had it right, man, stay

472
00:25:13.920 --> 00:25:16.000
away from them kids until they get older. They did

473
00:25:16.039 --> 00:25:20.079
not just stay in life themselfs. But no, it's really difficult,

474
00:25:20.480 --> 00:25:23.880
but it's it's it's it's a part of the process.

475
00:25:25.119 --> 00:25:27.759
Sometimes the hearted times come out and then I see

476
00:25:27.799 --> 00:25:30.839
people who is a gentleman, I won't say his name,

477
00:25:30.880 --> 00:25:33.440
but he had a situation where he and his wife

478
00:25:33.519 --> 00:25:37.200
divorced and he was kept away from his children until

479
00:25:37.240 --> 00:25:40.319
each one turned eighteen, and they all wind up coming

480
00:25:40.680 --> 00:25:44.359
and living with him at some point and having the relationship.

481
00:25:44.359 --> 00:25:46.039
It's a shame that you have to wait that long

482
00:25:46.079 --> 00:25:49.359
because it's not promised, you know, somethinking that you know,

483
00:25:49.599 --> 00:25:53.119
But everything in life happens for a recent time, and

484
00:25:53.720 --> 00:25:56.160
for me, that's what I've hold on to. I hold

485
00:25:56.200 --> 00:25:58.160
on the fact that I don't lose faith, I don't

486
00:25:58.279 --> 00:26:00.799
lose the love for my children, and I hold them

487
00:26:00.839 --> 00:26:02.799
to respect for myself. I know I'm a good dad.

488
00:26:02.839 --> 00:26:04.559
I know I'm a great dad, and as a million

489
00:26:04.680 --> 00:26:06.680
kids that would love to have a father like me.

490
00:26:07.119 --> 00:26:09.759
I telp my kids that all the time. But uh,

491
00:26:09.920 --> 00:26:13.799
you know, but yeah it's okay, we don't be fine.

492
00:26:15.279 --> 00:26:17.559
What did you have to let go of to become

493
00:26:17.720 --> 00:26:18.680
who you are today?

494
00:26:20.519 --> 00:26:22.440
Yeah? I had to let go of the fear. I

495
00:26:23.319 --> 00:26:25.960
had this fear that was with me this whole time.

496
00:26:26.440 --> 00:26:28.200
If I could tell you that, I'm sure you can

497
00:26:28.319 --> 00:26:31.680
understand when I say this and everybody listening, everything that

498
00:26:31.720 --> 00:26:35.200
I experienced all my ways, all of the great moments

499
00:26:35.240 --> 00:26:38.240
on television, being the youngest host on show Talpic, their

500
00:26:38.240 --> 00:26:42.079
power of being on national radio. All of it was done.

501
00:26:42.359 --> 00:26:45.000
All of it on a scale of one to ten.

502
00:26:45.079 --> 00:26:48.759
That was due who was done on a level two confidence.

503
00:26:50.039 --> 00:26:52.480
My confidence was at it too. I was just so

504
00:26:52.680 --> 00:26:55.759
talented that I can just kind of make up for

505
00:26:55.880 --> 00:26:58.400
all of the lack of confidence that I've had. So,

506
00:26:58.920 --> 00:27:00.759
you know a lot of my friends, he's like Kevin

507
00:27:00.799 --> 00:27:04.559
hard or you know Bill Burg, or you know, I

508
00:27:04.640 --> 00:27:08.480
can name a million guys. Joe caught the element that

509
00:27:08.480 --> 00:27:12.079
they have that no one really sees because it's something

510
00:27:12.119 --> 00:27:15.599
that's idiots. The confidence that these guys have had. And

511
00:27:15.680 --> 00:27:17.960
I saw it in all of them and I never

512
00:27:18.119 --> 00:27:20.440
had it. And some of it it comes different ways

513
00:27:20.440 --> 00:27:22.519
to not being raved a certain way. But there's certain

514
00:27:22.559 --> 00:27:25.200
things that happened, like I said, in my childhood that

515
00:27:25.319 --> 00:27:27.400
just kept me feeling like the trap door was open.

516
00:27:27.519 --> 00:27:29.480
Just do it enough to stay safe, do enough to

517
00:27:29.559 --> 00:27:32.920
stay inside the circle. That way you can make a living.

518
00:27:33.000 --> 00:27:35.200
You don't have to be rich. You know, That's why

519
00:27:35.240 --> 00:27:37.720
I'm went. You know, I'm not into radio with a

520
00:27:37.759 --> 00:27:40.079
decision because nobody can really see me at the time.

521
00:27:40.160 --> 00:27:43.160
It was no social media, so you would have to

522
00:27:43.200 --> 00:27:45.960
really dig and go on online and maybe see what

523
00:27:46.079 --> 00:27:51.519
the rush look like. And when social came out and

524
00:27:52.079 --> 00:27:55.319
you know, now everybody has every voice and everything like that.

525
00:27:55.440 --> 00:27:57.799
So yeah, that was one of the things that I

526
00:27:57.799 --> 00:27:59.759
had to deal with, is fear, and now I don't

527
00:27:59.799 --> 00:28:03.640
have and now it's difficult for me. You know, I'm

528
00:28:03.640 --> 00:28:06.440
still not at a ten, but I'm past seven song

529
00:28:06.519 --> 00:28:07.359
with that eight and nine.

530
00:28:07.400 --> 00:28:11.559
That's true, Rudy, that is impressive growth from A two

531
00:28:11.799 --> 00:28:14.799
two a seven. How did you get there? Like what

532
00:28:15.359 --> 00:28:18.480
you know, how help us hack that fear? Because fear

533
00:28:18.519 --> 00:28:20.079
is very real for a lot of people, and you

534
00:28:20.119 --> 00:28:22.640
and I have talked about it. I believe that fear

535
00:28:23.200 --> 00:28:25.519
and excitement are the same chemical in your brain and

536
00:28:25.519 --> 00:28:29.160
you get to decide, but you still feel the fear.

537
00:28:29.240 --> 00:28:32.039
It's still part of the process. So how did you

538
00:28:32.079 --> 00:28:34.759
work through and how would you coach people to do

539
00:28:35.640 --> 00:28:36.759
that level of growth?

540
00:28:37.480 --> 00:28:40.759
Well, you know, Ty, you hear a lot of stories

541
00:28:40.960 --> 00:28:43.440
and it's funny you watch it internet and you see

542
00:28:43.440 --> 00:28:45.920
all these memes and you see all of these little

543
00:28:46.000 --> 00:28:50.319
videos about kicking rock bottom, and you know, even there

544
00:28:50.400 --> 00:28:52.359
was a time when I will think about people will

545
00:28:52.400 --> 00:28:55.720
come to school, you know, for career day and say,

546
00:28:55.880 --> 00:28:58.279
you know what, if anything you want to be mine

547
00:28:58.400 --> 00:29:00.599
to it in bubble buff And I used to think

548
00:29:00.599 --> 00:29:02.920
it was about a mumbo jumble because I wanted to

549
00:29:03.039 --> 00:29:05.960
change all those years that I was living in fear.

550
00:29:07.160 --> 00:29:10.599
Wanted to change it, but its kept having it for me,

551
00:29:10.960 --> 00:29:13.319
and so it allowed me to live in my fear,

552
00:29:13.359 --> 00:29:15.559
you know, and it allowed me to be safe within

553
00:29:15.640 --> 00:29:17.880
the fear, like, hey, as long as I stay afraid,

554
00:29:18.559 --> 00:29:21.599
these things won't change. I'll make you know I won't

555
00:29:21.680 --> 00:29:25.240
leave the iron doll on stage, you know that verbial

556
00:29:25.359 --> 00:29:28.759
thought process, like I won't leave anything. So every time

557
00:29:28.799 --> 00:29:31.759
I would go on stage top, I was like totally

558
00:29:31.799 --> 00:29:34.160
like I wasn't going through like a fit, but I

559
00:29:34.160 --> 00:29:37.319
would have this fear like you know that shit fail,

560
00:29:37.519 --> 00:29:41.599
don't fail, don't fail. And now I don't feel it

561
00:29:42.240 --> 00:29:44.880
because of what I went through and what I went through,

562
00:29:44.920 --> 00:29:48.079
and what I'll tell people is sometimes hitting that rock

563
00:29:48.160 --> 00:29:51.759
bottom which I hit, made me have to be hungry again,

564
00:29:51.920 --> 00:29:54.319
had to make me start from the beginning again. Even

565
00:29:54.359 --> 00:29:56.319
though I have all these great jokes and I had

566
00:29:56.480 --> 00:29:59.200
all the technique, and I have the cachet and I

567
00:29:59.319 --> 00:30:02.119
have the ca ability of people putting me on shows.

568
00:30:02.319 --> 00:30:04.640
I don't have to start from the bottom in that respect,

569
00:30:04.640 --> 00:30:08.000
when I have to start from a place where to

570
00:30:08.039 --> 00:30:10.119
become a new Rudy, I don't have to walk in

571
00:30:10.240 --> 00:30:12.559
with my shoulders brought or whatever. But I do have

572
00:30:12.640 --> 00:30:15.640
to hold my head up to know that after thirty years,

573
00:30:15.680 --> 00:30:17.759
I'm wanted the best doing it. And if you go

574
00:30:17.839 --> 00:30:20.319
out there and you execute properly, then you're going to

575
00:30:20.400 --> 00:30:22.200
have a great show. You don't have to be afraid

576
00:30:22.240 --> 00:30:25.440
to make sure you hit every punchline. You on the punchline,

577
00:30:25.440 --> 00:30:28.480
you are the diner and so like you know, that's

578
00:30:28.480 --> 00:30:30.279
what kind of helped me. So if you're hit a

579
00:30:30.359 --> 00:30:33.480
place where you're at bottom and your kids seem in

580
00:30:33.519 --> 00:30:36.599
any movement, you have to move and move to fear.

581
00:30:37.160 --> 00:30:40.799
And that was my biggest issue, and so that that

582
00:30:41.000 --> 00:30:42.720
was definitely Yeah.

583
00:30:43.359 --> 00:30:46.279
Well, you've alluded to some pretty cool rooms and some

584
00:30:46.319 --> 00:30:49.519
pretty interesting people that you've gotten the opportunity to work

585
00:30:49.559 --> 00:30:52.599
with and collaborate with. And it makes me curious and

586
00:30:52.680 --> 00:30:57.160
wondering what your lessons are like, what have you garnered

587
00:30:57.200 --> 00:31:00.599
from those rooms that has taught you or that you

588
00:31:00.720 --> 00:31:02.200
develop into who you are today.

589
00:31:02.799 --> 00:31:06.759
Really you know what room that I was in that

590
00:31:07.000 --> 00:31:10.799
that really set the tones for me. And I didn't

591
00:31:10.839 --> 00:31:12.880
realize it at the time. I was still living in

592
00:31:12.880 --> 00:31:15.799
that field, but something told me I was. I was

593
00:31:15.839 --> 00:31:19.039
going to Los Angeles. I was invited to be a

594
00:31:19.079 --> 00:31:22.279
part of Netflix twenty five for death Jam def Comedy

595
00:31:22.359 --> 00:31:26.599
Jam on Netflix twenty five years And there's me the

596
00:31:26.680 --> 00:31:30.799
information to fight out and staying to Beverny Helton all

597
00:31:30.799 --> 00:31:34.119
this other stuff, and you know that part of me

598
00:31:34.160 --> 00:31:38.039
thought I didn't belong. I really wasn't gonna go. I

599
00:31:38.160 --> 00:31:40.480
was like, I don't go, you know, you don't have

600
00:31:40.880 --> 00:31:43.519
a shirt, you know, like, you know, coming up with

601
00:31:43.599 --> 00:31:45.599
little things in my mind to kind of keep me

602
00:31:45.640 --> 00:31:48.359
from going, and something just kicked me in the bother.

603
00:31:48.519 --> 00:31:51.640
It was like, Reverdy go, just go so you could

604
00:31:51.680 --> 00:31:54.119
see people. Just go, so you could, you know, maybe

605
00:31:54.279 --> 00:31:56.920
have an opportunity. They're paying for it. It's a free trip.

606
00:31:57.119 --> 00:32:00.599
You just started this radio gig in Houston. Just go.

607
00:32:01.119 --> 00:32:04.599
Things would be good if you go. And honestly, that

608
00:32:04.799 --> 00:32:08.039
was the beginning of understanding where I stood amongst my peers,

609
00:32:08.039 --> 00:32:10.440
where I said, oh I was sitting next to and

610
00:32:10.480 --> 00:32:13.200
then to see where everyone else was sitting and the

611
00:32:13.279 --> 00:32:18.960
way they placed me, ah, it was in my opinion,

612
00:32:19.039 --> 00:32:22.119
it was unreal, Like I felt like, man, they think

613
00:32:22.160 --> 00:32:24.720
this highly of me, and they put me in this

614
00:32:24.799 --> 00:32:27.319
in the circle that was closer to the stage where

615
00:32:27.759 --> 00:32:30.119
Dave Chicago could be on stage, and they start giving

616
00:32:30.119 --> 00:32:32.960
me shoutouts and he acknowledges me to on where people

617
00:32:33.039 --> 00:32:36.000
call me or the delivery guys from Africa, like I

618
00:32:36.079 --> 00:32:41.920
told my friends, I think so it just made me

619
00:32:42.000 --> 00:32:45.079
feel not only accepted by my peers, but to let

620
00:32:45.079 --> 00:32:47.359
me know, like all the things that I've done, like

621
00:32:47.519 --> 00:32:49.920
I was doing the right thing. So it took away

622
00:32:50.000 --> 00:32:52.880
some of that fear. And so yeah, you know being

623
00:32:52.920 --> 00:32:55.799
in that room, but it also put me in rooms

624
00:32:56.000 --> 00:32:59.680
and forward that you know, made people feel uncomfortable. You

625
00:32:59.759 --> 00:33:02.039
got to be prepared for that. You gotta know how

626
00:33:02.079 --> 00:33:05.400
to accept that. You can't take it personally. Sometimes there's

627
00:33:05.400 --> 00:33:08.880
people dealing with their own demons. So you know, June

628
00:33:08.880 --> 00:33:12.079
will be two years since I stopped drinking. So people

629
00:33:12.079 --> 00:33:15.400
who aren't drink with before, you know, they look at

630
00:33:15.440 --> 00:33:19.480
it always stopped drinking. Yeah, blah wah, I'm just I

631
00:33:19.559 --> 00:33:21.519
just want to live a little more or being less

632
00:33:21.559 --> 00:33:24.559
fogging it, blah blah blah, lose some weight. Whatever the

633
00:33:24.599 --> 00:33:27.039
case may be, has nothing to do with what you're

634
00:33:27.119 --> 00:33:30.200
doing with your life. But you feel like this is

635
00:33:30.240 --> 00:33:32.400
a mirror that's showing me the negative side of you.

636
00:33:32.559 --> 00:33:35.119
So you know, anything you have, if it's child, if

637
00:33:35.119 --> 00:33:37.680
it's talent, you know, you have to understand you're gonna

638
00:33:37.720 --> 00:33:41.000
make somebody feel uncomfortable, even if they're a nice person normally,

639
00:33:41.079 --> 00:33:43.559
and may turn it against you. That's what they now like.

640
00:33:44.000 --> 00:33:47.279
So you know enough with that, and I stay confident

641
00:33:47.319 --> 00:33:49.680
and I don't worry about who likes being who doesn't.

642
00:33:49.720 --> 00:33:51.640
They used to be a big thing for me. Now

643
00:33:51.759 --> 00:33:53.720
I don't necessarily a kid. If you don't like me,

644
00:33:54.119 --> 00:33:56.440
you don't like me. But then you got to stay

645
00:33:56.480 --> 00:33:57.960
on that side of the street. I don't know how

646
00:33:57.960 --> 00:33:59.000
people being rude.

647
00:34:00.680 --> 00:34:05.480
Well, congrats on two years sober almost that's amazing. I'm

648
00:34:05.680 --> 00:34:08.559
a sober sister myself, so I have mad respect for that.

649
00:34:09.320 --> 00:34:12.519
And I was listening to that story, and what was

650
00:34:12.559 --> 00:34:17.239
really interesting was you the reason you went. You just

651
00:34:17.320 --> 00:34:20.119
went anyway, you said, just go like just so you

652
00:34:20.199 --> 00:34:23.920
followed your gut, which is really important for people because

653
00:34:23.960 --> 00:34:25.760
I think a lot of us hear that or feel

654
00:34:25.760 --> 00:34:29.199
that little poll and they, you know, they stay, they

655
00:34:29.280 --> 00:34:32.519
choose to stay comfortable instead, like you made yourself uncomfortable

656
00:34:32.559 --> 00:34:35.639
because you just went and you followed your gut. And

657
00:34:36.320 --> 00:34:38.639
the way that you made that happen though, was you

658
00:34:38.679 --> 00:34:43.079
didn't just go, you started. You coached yourself through some

659
00:34:43.159 --> 00:34:46.039
good things that were helping you just make the decision.

660
00:34:46.119 --> 00:34:48.760
So like you took like the baby steps to get

661
00:34:48.760 --> 00:34:51.199
to the decision to follow your gut. Which I think

662
00:34:51.239 --> 00:34:53.880
there's there's a huge and super important lesson there for

663
00:34:53.920 --> 00:34:57.840
people because movement, you know, I talk about music, mindset

664
00:34:57.920 --> 00:35:00.400
and movement being the tools that have essentially help me

665
00:35:00.480 --> 00:35:03.880
build what I think is a pretty unreal life. And

666
00:35:04.440 --> 00:35:07.480
movement can be physical activity, but it can also just

667
00:35:07.519 --> 00:35:10.360
be your movement in your life, you know. And you

668
00:35:10.400 --> 00:35:13.639
took the first step without really knowing the whole path,

669
00:35:14.320 --> 00:35:17.639
and there's there's value there. And I'm wondering when else

670
00:35:17.800 --> 00:35:19.719
that that has paid off for you? Like what other

671
00:35:19.800 --> 00:35:24.199
situations have you just gone that ended up, you know,

672
00:35:24.480 --> 00:35:26.519
launching you into something you weren't expecting.

673
00:35:27.199 --> 00:35:31.760
Oh man, you know, so it's just opening yourself to

674
00:35:32.320 --> 00:35:34.760
traggeing die and Vogue with people that you know. I

675
00:35:34.840 --> 00:35:39.199
meet people all the time and it's just normal conversation.

676
00:35:39.440 --> 00:35:43.679
It's always good conversation, clean, fun and listen. But I'm

677
00:35:43.719 --> 00:35:46.039
meeting more people and getting to know more about them

678
00:35:46.079 --> 00:35:47.840
and letting them know a little bit more about me.

679
00:35:48.360 --> 00:35:52.519
And now it's turning into a situation where like honestly tied,

680
00:35:52.599 --> 00:35:54.920
you know, And you'll realize this at some point, which

681
00:35:54.960 --> 00:35:57.559
I feel like you already may have. It's like you

682
00:35:57.639 --> 00:36:00.079
have to realize what you're worth, Like you know, if

683
00:36:00.159 --> 00:36:03.559
you invest or you get involved with ruddy rushing that

684
00:36:03.599 --> 00:36:06.079
comes along with it. There's a lot of knowledge, there's

685
00:36:06.119 --> 00:36:10.159
a lot of you know, uh, you know things that

686
00:36:10.239 --> 00:36:12.800
you can get from dealing with me. There's a lot

687
00:36:12.800 --> 00:36:15.760
of access, there's there's all these things that I'm quiet

688
00:36:15.840 --> 00:36:19.480
over by thirty plus years, and entertainment that I can

689
00:36:19.559 --> 00:36:24.800
abide even with podcasts, doing podcast or doing hosting a

690
00:36:24.960 --> 00:36:28.639
huge show where let's just say, like I fosted for

691
00:36:28.679 --> 00:36:33.360
the mvr's moph Tour. The Moth is a storytelling grow

692
00:36:33.360 --> 00:36:35.960
about in New York and it's a literary event. And

693
00:36:36.039 --> 00:36:38.679
not to say that this jam show talk at the

694
00:36:38.679 --> 00:36:41.840
Apollom Couldnia couldn't do it. But I don't think there's

695
00:36:41.880 --> 00:36:43.800
anyone else who could have done it better than I did.

696
00:36:43.960 --> 00:36:46.480
And sometimes I was the only black guy in the room.

697
00:36:46.840 --> 00:36:50.159
And I got a letter wants to let me know

698
00:36:50.280 --> 00:36:53.320
how well or how much I impacted that tour. It

699
00:36:53.480 --> 00:36:58.000
was a young lady on the tours. These are storytellers time.

700
00:36:58.360 --> 00:37:00.719
And this woman was afraid that a week in that,

701
00:37:00.960 --> 00:37:04.039
you know, because she was, you know, of the community,

702
00:37:04.079 --> 00:37:07.039
the LGBT community. She thought she would be looked at

703
00:37:07.079 --> 00:37:09.880
a certain way. She's part of the feminist momment in

704
00:37:09.880 --> 00:37:13.400
New York. She would own the holder. She felt uncomfortable

705
00:37:13.440 --> 00:37:17.119
about being and we would sell out these different theaters,

706
00:37:17.280 --> 00:37:20.079
whether it's Portland or on the ball up and you know,

707
00:37:20.280 --> 00:37:25.199
and they tuckett all over the place. We were in Chicago, Minneapolis.

708
00:37:25.239 --> 00:37:28.039
But she wrote me a long letter about how she

709
00:37:28.159 --> 00:37:31.679
was uncomfortable and she felt a little ashamed to notice that,

710
00:37:31.920 --> 00:37:35.400
you know, she can hide her sexuality, she can hide

711
00:37:35.440 --> 00:37:38.119
and find that until of course she tells a story.

712
00:37:38.320 --> 00:37:42.000
But to see be an African American mail and as

713
00:37:42.039 --> 00:37:45.400
young as I was, and then to see we not

714
00:37:45.800 --> 00:37:48.320
have any fear, you know, because sometimes I'll be at

715
00:37:48.320 --> 00:37:51.039
the moment it's stared as I have the people to

716
00:37:51.119 --> 00:37:53.159
a'll know you know what I mean. Fighters will tell

717
00:37:53.199 --> 00:37:56.000
you that too. Prize fighters would tell you this skid

718
00:37:56.079 --> 00:37:58.360
when they go on the rigging that sometimes helps these

719
00:37:58.440 --> 00:38:01.239
SOI it helped me all the these s. It kept

720
00:38:01.239 --> 00:38:04.800
me safe. But she just commanded the fact that you know,

721
00:38:04.840 --> 00:38:08.960
I just fit in. I didn't look like I was

722
00:38:09.039 --> 00:38:11.679
afraid or I was you know, it just made her

723
00:38:11.679 --> 00:38:13.880
feel like, oh, I can let my guard down if

724
00:38:13.960 --> 00:38:16.599
Rudy can do this. So it's also the things I'll

725
00:38:16.679 --> 00:38:19.000
letter and that's how I carry on.

726
00:38:20.519 --> 00:38:24.679
Well, what I love about that Rudy is it's contagious

727
00:38:25.079 --> 00:38:29.760
like you. You are contagious in a good way like that,

728
00:38:29.880 --> 00:38:33.159
And that's it. That's honestly like goals for me, right,

729
00:38:33.239 --> 00:38:36.039
Like I talk about trying to be the light that

730
00:38:35.639 --> 00:38:37.960
I I want to see in the world a lot,

731
00:38:38.039 --> 00:38:42.079
and you know, Matthew five sixteen, it's it's it's really

732
00:38:42.119 --> 00:38:44.400
cool when you see it in real time unfold like

733
00:38:44.440 --> 00:38:47.920
that because you choosing to move through the fear and

734
00:38:48.119 --> 00:38:50.480
kind of like essentially have it be part of you,

735
00:38:50.719 --> 00:38:52.840
but like not a part that's going to slow you down,

736
00:38:52.880 --> 00:38:56.519
a part that's going to feel you instead has you know,

737
00:38:56.679 --> 00:39:00.559
the ability to empower others to see that that's possible

738
00:39:00.719 --> 00:39:02.559
and then to do it in their own life, which

739
00:39:02.599 --> 00:39:06.519
is really powerful. So, you know, thank you for being

740
00:39:06.559 --> 00:39:08.800
that energy force in the world because we need we

741
00:39:08.880 --> 00:39:09.639
need more of us.

742
00:39:11.119 --> 00:39:14.760
No, we don't thank you for thinking about how it

743
00:39:14.760 --> 00:39:17.159
will be tired like and you know, like, you know,

744
00:39:17.199 --> 00:39:20.320
we all get up in the morning and hopefully brush

745
00:39:20.360 --> 00:39:22.800
out to even you know, put our hands on one

746
00:39:22.880 --> 00:39:26.039
leg at the time. We're all very similar in a

747
00:39:26.079 --> 00:39:28.760
lot of ways. But then there's something deep inside of

748
00:39:28.800 --> 00:39:31.599
you that you really need to tap into it. You know,

749
00:39:32.000 --> 00:39:34.559
the older you get, you may have little glimpses of

750
00:39:34.639 --> 00:39:36.840
it and you can tap into it, but the sort

751
00:39:37.159 --> 00:39:38.679
to get it to it. If I can speak to

752
00:39:38.719 --> 00:39:41.639
my youngest self and tell my youngest self something like that,

753
00:39:42.000 --> 00:39:46.559
I would definitely be like, yo, man, you know, really

754
00:39:46.920 --> 00:39:52.000
enjoy yourself, really really understand how great you are. And

755
00:39:52.079 --> 00:39:54.679
you know, I know it's even as I'm saying it

756
00:39:54.840 --> 00:39:57.119
right now, I feel uncomfortable saying that I'm great. But

757
00:39:57.199 --> 00:40:00.559
I am great, met some great people, I've done some

758
00:40:00.599 --> 00:40:03.760
great things, and everything that I've done even help people

759
00:40:03.800 --> 00:40:08.119
make themselves superstars. There's some people who have helped their careers,

760
00:40:08.280 --> 00:40:11.840
or there's some people who have helped across the street.

761
00:40:12.079 --> 00:40:15.320
It's great, it's you know, and everybody's not built like that,

762
00:40:15.480 --> 00:40:18.480
so you know, you know, accept the good about yourself,

763
00:40:18.679 --> 00:40:21.719
really dig into the top where you are and live

764
00:40:21.760 --> 00:40:23.280
in that. Well.

765
00:40:23.320 --> 00:40:25.360
You answered my what would you tell your twenty two

766
00:40:25.440 --> 00:40:29.679
year old self question without even Oh you've got a

767
00:40:29.719 --> 00:40:31.280
different you've got a different answer for that.

768
00:40:31.559 --> 00:40:32.760
You got a quat Oh.

769
00:40:34.199 --> 00:40:36.679
I'm ready, I'm ready, Rudy, you go, you tell me

770
00:40:36.719 --> 00:40:38.920
what would you tell your twenty because I love that answer,

771
00:40:39.039 --> 00:40:41.960
what you're telling your younger self. But I'm the specific

772
00:40:42.039 --> 00:40:44.280
twenty two thing. I want to hear it now.

773
00:40:44.760 --> 00:40:47.840
I will tell my twenty two years the almost whole bank.

774
00:40:47.920 --> 00:40:51.480
Go have a family, Go do like you know, my kids,

775
00:40:51.760 --> 00:40:53.800
because I did have my first child then I was

776
00:40:53.880 --> 00:40:58.159
thirty three. So at twenty two, my kids now being

777
00:40:58.320 --> 00:41:02.559
thirty and twenty and we would all be children, all vacatient,

778
00:41:02.599 --> 00:41:05.239
and I would just be like, hey, I'll be right back.

779
00:41:05.360 --> 00:41:07.159
You know what I mean. Now, it's just like all

780
00:41:07.239 --> 00:41:09.559
of these things we would have of the pandemic a

781
00:41:09.639 --> 00:41:11.320
different way, and all of a sudden stuff. But no,

782
00:41:11.320 --> 00:41:14.639
I would tell my youngest self at twenty two, be

783
00:41:14.800 --> 00:41:18.239
more mindful for you allowing your circles, who you let be,

784
00:41:18.840 --> 00:41:22.000
who you trusted, take care of your career. Unfortunately, and

785
00:41:22.039 --> 00:41:23.960
you you know, that's another thing that can't helped me

786
00:41:24.039 --> 00:41:27.880
because millions and when Nott and I'm not being funny,

787
00:41:29.519 --> 00:41:32.199
you know a lot of money was taken from me

788
00:41:32.360 --> 00:41:36.079
because of mine. You know, I don't know. I like

789
00:41:36.199 --> 00:41:38.599
to use the word ignorance when you are coming from

790
00:41:38.599 --> 00:41:44.480
a disfranchise background like myself. You know, I don't think

791
00:41:45.079 --> 00:41:48.079
I don't either. No disrespect to my mom. I don't

792
00:41:48.079 --> 00:41:50.519
think she's never had one thousand dollars at one time.

793
00:41:51.960 --> 00:41:55.039
Always went to Bill's food for us or what anson.

794
00:41:55.119 --> 00:41:57.960
It was definitely pobac oh, I take this two hundred dollars,

795
00:41:57.960 --> 00:42:00.360
they go do it. That was never that. Well, now

796
00:42:00.400 --> 00:42:06.960
you're giving me one hundred thousand dollars, like, please give

797
00:42:06.960 --> 00:42:08.920
me a break, you know what I mean. So, so

798
00:42:09.119 --> 00:42:12.719
when someone's giving you that, you feel like you can

799
00:42:12.840 --> 00:42:18.239
trust them. But in the background, there's millions of dollars

800
00:42:18.280 --> 00:42:21.840
being made from your likeness, from your abilities and stuff

801
00:42:21.880 --> 00:42:24.800
like that. That's tough because you know, when you get

802
00:42:24.840 --> 00:42:27.559
old and things start to show themselves and you're like, man,

803
00:42:27.599 --> 00:42:32.360
I could have had this whole you know, you know,

804
00:42:32.400 --> 00:42:35.280
could have been the foundation for my financial and my

805
00:42:35.360 --> 00:42:39.400
family's financial goals and needs and stuff like that, and

806
00:42:39.440 --> 00:42:41.920
it was taking advantage. I gave you one quick story.

807
00:42:42.480 --> 00:42:46.800
I was on the McDonald's tour. McDonald's had a tour

808
00:42:46.880 --> 00:42:51.000
with the Power Kids. It was Showtime McDonald's, a power

809
00:42:51.119 --> 00:42:53.559
Kids tour and we would find the different kids to

810
00:42:53.599 --> 00:42:58.679
put on the show. Come. I'm twenty one, twenty two

811
00:42:59.000 --> 00:43:02.400
years old, maybe twenty three years old, And you have

812
00:43:02.440 --> 00:43:05.199
to understand, they would pay me over fifteen Like it

813
00:43:05.280 --> 00:43:08.719
was in the summertime. I was getting fifteen, one hundred

814
00:43:08.800 --> 00:43:14.000
dollars a show. It was great, buddy, one show date,

815
00:43:14.039 --> 00:43:17.840
my briddy, you know. So so, you know, over a

816
00:43:17.840 --> 00:43:22.599
two month period of fifteen dates and I'm good, I

817
00:43:23.000 --> 00:43:26.519
so I and so I sat down. It was year five,

818
00:43:26.599 --> 00:43:29.039
it was the last year the tours. Right before the

819
00:43:29.119 --> 00:43:31.800
last year the tour, and one of the representatives from

820
00:43:31.920 --> 00:43:34.679
McDonald's who I became good friends with, you know, they

821
00:43:34.760 --> 00:43:36.679
asked me. They was like, hey, what's going on? They

822
00:43:36.760 --> 00:43:39.000
say to you, taking care of you over there over

823
00:43:39.039 --> 00:43:43.280
at Apollo, how much are they paying? And I told

824
00:43:43.280 --> 00:43:44.880
them with pride, I was like, oh, I'll be at

825
00:43:44.920 --> 00:43:47.199
fifteen one hundred. I was staying at the holiday after

826
00:43:47.400 --> 00:43:51.679
Free you know, find first class of the Americans. So

827
00:43:51.760 --> 00:43:54.800
all of these things that I've never experienced before, I'm experiencing.

828
00:43:55.239 --> 00:43:57.079
But I hit it, tell you, and I've hit it

829
00:43:57.119 --> 00:43:59.519
out anyone else. You know, it's hard when they say

830
00:44:00.079 --> 00:44:03.880
you know your work, because you know that's a huge,

831
00:44:03.920 --> 00:44:05.360
great area.

832
00:44:04.760 --> 00:44:05.719
You know.

833
00:44:05.840 --> 00:44:08.400
Either one, you feel like you know you really don't

834
00:44:08.440 --> 00:44:10.960
know how much you're worth. But I'll say this, this

835
00:44:11.039 --> 00:44:14.199
helps anybody. It helps you child to get negotiat those

836
00:44:14.199 --> 00:44:18.199
big deals you got coming up. It's like I need

837
00:44:18.239 --> 00:44:20.360
some one in your corner to representa you that those

838
00:44:20.360 --> 00:44:22.559
are the theying to not taking their vantage. I left

839
00:44:22.599 --> 00:44:27.079
from fifteen hundred dollars to show to fifteen thousand dollars

840
00:44:27.159 --> 00:44:31.760
a show. Wow, how did you do that? Now? The

841
00:44:31.880 --> 00:44:34.199
thing that saves me I see these TV shows. I

842
00:44:34.239 --> 00:44:37.400
see these you know, these stories where music artists and

843
00:44:37.440 --> 00:44:40.079
other people get taken advantage of. So puts me in

844
00:44:40.159 --> 00:44:43.480
that place where two ways, one, you're not the only

845
00:44:43.519 --> 00:44:46.559
one who's been taking advantage of number two. People ain't

846
00:44:46.559 --> 00:44:48.320
gonna care because they have to say, look at them,

847
00:44:48.360 --> 00:44:50.079
they went through it too. It happens you have so

848
00:44:50.199 --> 00:44:52.119
no one really can't. So if I go on top

849
00:44:52.159 --> 00:44:55.920
of the mountain, no, there's no there's no gofund be

850
00:44:56.039 --> 00:44:58.920
that's gonna replenish or I lost. I just tell the

851
00:44:59.039 --> 00:45:02.000
house love, I have the forty two, and I still

852
00:45:02.079 --> 00:45:04.960
have the youth, and I still have the vintality to

853
00:45:05.039 --> 00:45:07.119
go back on stage and do these things and make

854
00:45:07.199 --> 00:45:12.199
another run at being great. So that was s it. Wow.

855
00:45:12.719 --> 00:45:17.079
I mean, you know, it didn't didn't to make badness

856
00:45:17.119 --> 00:45:19.480
worse if you think about that. If they were doing

857
00:45:19.559 --> 00:45:23.039
that when yeah, they were getting when they don't think

858
00:45:23.039 --> 00:45:25.360
of how much they were paying Steve Army and then

859
00:45:25.480 --> 00:45:27.800
paying me. I thought it was a lot of money,

860
00:45:27.800 --> 00:45:30.079
but it was probably mallions they were paying him. They

861
00:45:30.159 --> 00:45:34.039
were paying me like hundreds of thousands of dollars, which,

862
00:45:34.119 --> 00:45:36.480
like I said, again, a young kid from harle Them

863
00:45:36.840 --> 00:45:41.000
twenty six, the youngest hosted the show's history. I'll still

864
00:45:41.039 --> 00:45:44.880
like a millionaires. Yeah, and then all actuality, they were

865
00:45:45.159 --> 00:45:48.679
you know, living up you know where the money was

866
00:45:48.719 --> 00:45:51.039
going for them. But it was a huge tough of

867
00:45:51.119 --> 00:45:54.920
the venturous, and I learned that lesson at least, I thought,

868
00:45:54.960 --> 00:45:57.639
you still have to go through light. You hit the

869
00:45:57.800 --> 00:46:00.280
bombs and bruises along the way, and you just God

870
00:46:00.280 --> 00:46:02.000
and just stay stay focused.

871
00:46:03.679 --> 00:46:07.280
So let's be super practical then, because I hear you saying,

872
00:46:07.360 --> 00:46:09.679
we need to know what you're worth and I appreciate

873
00:46:09.800 --> 00:46:15.440
your energy around it, And I think that's really hard, Like,

874
00:46:15.480 --> 00:46:18.000
I think that's super hard for people to say, well,

875
00:46:18.039 --> 00:46:21.360
I am worth X dollars for X amount of time.

876
00:46:21.480 --> 00:46:24.599
Like so how like because I know that a lot

877
00:46:24.639 --> 00:46:27.880
of my listeners and viewers are entrepreneurs and people that

878
00:46:27.920 --> 00:46:31.159
are pushing for more and working for working on dreams

879
00:46:31.159 --> 00:46:35.440
that might that others might seem others might think seem unreal.

880
00:46:35.880 --> 00:46:38.800
So knowing that, like, how how do you how do

881
00:46:38.800 --> 00:46:40.480
you figure that out? You said you had some amount

882
00:46:40.519 --> 00:46:43.519
of help from from like a mentor types or people

883
00:46:43.519 --> 00:46:45.519
in your corner. Can you walk me through what that

884
00:46:45.559 --> 00:46:48.239
looks like and how people can like what we can

885
00:46:48.320 --> 00:46:51.000
learn from what you experience with all that?

886
00:46:51.880 --> 00:46:54.840
Yeah, you learn different techniques, you know. One of the

887
00:46:54.880 --> 00:47:00.320
things out learned, you know, like I said, trusting someone Actually,

888
00:47:00.360 --> 00:47:03.559
if you know, if you're an entrepreneur. Sometimes you're the person,

889
00:47:03.679 --> 00:47:06.199
the man or the woman out front and you're making

890
00:47:06.239 --> 00:47:08.480
the deals. In that case, you know, if you know

891
00:47:08.519 --> 00:47:11.159
what type of product you have, you know the belief

892
00:47:11.199 --> 00:47:14.159
you have in it, you don't want to undercut yourself.

893
00:47:14.159 --> 00:47:17.039
If it's a contract or a different thing you're looking

894
00:47:17.079 --> 00:47:20.159
and get involved with. You know, always ask, you know,

895
00:47:20.239 --> 00:47:22.719
the pressure goes to buy and what they're willing to spend.

896
00:47:22.840 --> 00:47:25.320
You know, that way you can start there because sometimes

897
00:47:25.440 --> 00:47:27.559
you can gen yourself up that way too. You know,

898
00:47:27.639 --> 00:47:30.000
you'll say, oh, you know they always but they always

899
00:47:30.000 --> 00:47:32.239
ask you, I must you want to do what you

900
00:47:32.280 --> 00:47:36.679
want to do over and you'll say, oh, thousand dollars

901
00:47:36.960 --> 00:47:38.880
you know, and you think you're saying a thousand because

902
00:47:38.880 --> 00:47:41.199
you don't want to say five because you feel like

903
00:47:41.239 --> 00:47:43.760
you're going to run them off. Well, you know, sometimes

904
00:47:43.800 --> 00:47:45.960
you got to stand your ground like can we offer

905
00:47:46.079 --> 00:47:48.440
we could work from there, and then you'll be surprised.

906
00:47:48.519 --> 00:47:51.440
They'll start off, oh you can send a thousand is

907
00:47:51.480 --> 00:47:53.639
that col and that you'd be like, oh, wait, I

908
00:47:53.719 --> 00:47:55.239
was gonna do it for I'm about to do it

909
00:47:55.239 --> 00:47:58.440
for one. You saying seven, you know, five is my number,

910
00:48:00.280 --> 00:48:02.559
you know, if you like the person, if you like

911
00:48:02.639 --> 00:48:05.960
the companies and see the you could see more coming

912
00:48:05.960 --> 00:48:09.039
out of that situation, then you do them something like, hey,

913
00:48:09.159 --> 00:48:12.000
let's do six and if this works for us, we'll

914
00:48:12.000 --> 00:48:14.679
break it up to twelve. Like there's different whitte to

915
00:48:14.800 --> 00:48:18.320
negotiate from me. I feel like I need a person

916
00:48:19.400 --> 00:48:23.079
who can talk, be my mettle person, because as an artist,

917
00:48:23.599 --> 00:48:26.360
you know, when you say no, it's you saying no.

918
00:48:26.559 --> 00:48:29.960
When you're agent or your loyal or your manager set

919
00:48:30.000 --> 00:48:32.559
us no. It's like, oh, man, Rudy wanted you to

920
00:48:32.599 --> 00:48:35.239
wear the chicken suit, but you know about her power

921
00:48:35.239 --> 00:48:37.079
would let you wear it. I'm like, here, the Todds

922
00:48:37.159 --> 00:48:41.159
crazy like that. I'm going for you know, and now

923
00:48:41.199 --> 00:48:43.920
it's on you and they still see me as the

924
00:48:43.960 --> 00:48:46.000
good guy. And I'm like, yeah, I'll talk to her

925
00:48:46.039 --> 00:48:48.199
see if I can still wear it. But man, she's

926
00:48:48.199 --> 00:48:50.880
stuck on me not wearing that chicken suit, you know.

927
00:48:50.679 --> 00:48:53.760
And it helps because when I say no, they're like, oh,

928
00:48:53.840 --> 00:48:56.599
Rudy's got a tea bay. It's all the doors closed

929
00:48:57.320 --> 00:49:00.920
and all these things happening, and you, you know, and

930
00:49:01.119 --> 00:49:03.679
when you're a nice person and say that too, being

931
00:49:03.719 --> 00:49:06.199
a nice person is not the best thing to be

932
00:49:06.400 --> 00:49:10.599
be fit, don't be nice, be fair. Fam allows you

933
00:49:10.760 --> 00:49:15.079
to be nice. Yeah, fear allows you to have boundaries

934
00:49:15.159 --> 00:49:18.639
because the minute that one thing happens, that everybody starts

935
00:49:18.679 --> 00:49:21.000
coming on. Oh I knew she wasn't nice. I knew

936
00:49:21.039 --> 00:49:23.840
he wasn't nice. And now you've becomes the bagdad overnight,

937
00:49:24.159 --> 00:49:29.000
everybody the sweetheart becomes developed and it's not a good

938
00:49:29.079 --> 00:49:31.280
feel at all in time, but it's when you got

939
00:49:31.400 --> 00:49:33.079
to deal with because you don't let them learned, like

940
00:49:33.119 --> 00:49:33.440
got did?

941
00:49:34.320 --> 00:49:38.800
You have given us a lot of solid advice, which

942
00:49:38.800 --> 00:49:42.000
I'm super grateful for. In addition to that, one of

943
00:49:42.039 --> 00:49:44.199
the things that I have gotten in the habit of

944
00:49:44.280 --> 00:49:47.599
asking my guests is if you had a megaphone to

945
00:49:48.280 --> 00:49:50.800
share a message with the world right now and everybody

946
00:49:50.920 --> 00:49:52.679
had to listen, what would you say?

947
00:49:55.320 --> 00:49:58.559
You know what, I'll be honest. I'll be honest. I'm like,

948
00:50:02.000 --> 00:50:05.360
that's a really good question. So basically what I would

949
00:50:05.400 --> 00:50:07.559
say is like, we only have this one light, and

950
00:50:08.079 --> 00:50:11.639
to be hateful and to be you know, manipulatent of it,

951
00:50:11.840 --> 00:50:14.559
things like that, It's just a part of life. But

952
00:50:15.519 --> 00:50:18.719
get cut the bs out, Like if you want some bs.

953
00:50:19.559 --> 00:50:23.639
You've got to change before you know, before it changes you.

954
00:50:24.079 --> 00:50:26.199
You know, I've seen some things happen to some people

955
00:50:26.199 --> 00:50:29.199
who are going the right track, and things happen and

956
00:50:29.239 --> 00:50:31.039
then you look back and see how they will live

957
00:50:31.079 --> 00:50:33.719
in and you'll be like, yeah, that's probably maybe something

958
00:50:33.800 --> 00:50:36.480
that attributed to it. But you know, my whole thing

959
00:50:36.599 --> 00:50:40.320
is like limp life fair, that's it, Live life fait.

960
00:50:42.559 --> 00:50:48.119
Picture your eightieth birthday, Rudy. I know, don't do the math,

961
00:50:48.559 --> 00:50:51.440
but picture the eightieth birthday, and I want to know

962
00:50:52.639 --> 00:50:54.920
not just who's there, because obviously we know that not

963
00:50:55.039 --> 00:50:56.840
everybody we want to be there will be there, but

964
00:50:57.599 --> 00:51:00.360
also what do you want people to be saying about

965
00:51:00.400 --> 00:51:01.199
who rude he was?

966
00:51:02.719 --> 00:51:05.360
You know, I think people are saying it already, which

967
00:51:05.400 --> 00:51:08.039
I'm real grateful for, like people who really know me,

968
00:51:09.400 --> 00:51:11.639
even people who have had issues with me, Like I'm

969
00:51:11.679 --> 00:51:14.400
a man who's apologized. I know when it's you know,

970
00:51:15.000 --> 00:51:18.000
like I got into arguments with guys who had fell

971
00:51:18.079 --> 00:51:20.360
back and be like, hey, you know, I don't think

972
00:51:20.440 --> 00:51:22.159
I said it the right way or I could have

973
00:51:22.199 --> 00:51:24.960
said it differently, but honestly, at eighty, I would just

974
00:51:25.119 --> 00:51:27.960
love to have my two children man, and if they

975
00:51:28.039 --> 00:51:31.000
have any children of their own, WHI should be my grandmabies.

976
00:51:31.159 --> 00:51:35.360
I want my daughters to just maybe us have a

977
00:51:35.480 --> 00:51:38.760
moment of Hey, Dad, you know, I know this was tough,

978
00:51:38.840 --> 00:51:41.039
and I know I was difficult. I know this was

979
00:51:41.119 --> 00:51:43.119
hard for you or whatever, like just to know like

980
00:51:43.559 --> 00:51:45.719
I did it the job because I got to speak

981
00:51:45.719 --> 00:51:48.719
to my father fifteen minutes before he passed. And you know,

982
00:51:48.800 --> 00:51:51.559
I still credit the hospice nurse for him calling me

983
00:51:51.800 --> 00:51:54.079
like at the right time, saying that, hey, your dad

984
00:51:54.280 --> 00:51:57.920
is going through And last he couldn't even talk because

985
00:51:57.920 --> 00:52:03.000
of the dimension. He hadn't spoken about two three months,

986
00:52:03.719 --> 00:52:06.239
and he tried to mumbow. I just told him, you

987
00:52:06.280 --> 00:52:09.360
did a great job about you know something among those lines,

988
00:52:09.400 --> 00:52:12.480
I wouldn't mind that. Yeah, this situation would I made.

989
00:52:12.880 --> 00:52:17.440
Yeah, we haven't talked much about music at all, and

990
00:52:17.800 --> 00:52:19.960
music is one of the tools in my tool belt

991
00:52:20.039 --> 00:52:24.199
to rebuild my life. So I'm curious what your song

992
00:52:24.440 --> 00:52:26.639
of survival is. Do you have a song that you

993
00:52:26.760 --> 00:52:28.639
go to when like you need to keep going and

994
00:52:28.719 --> 00:52:31.119
it feels hard and it helps hype you back up

995
00:52:31.239 --> 00:52:31.760
or ground you.

996
00:52:32.679 --> 00:52:35.400
Yeah, So there's a few, there's a lot of things

997
00:52:35.440 --> 00:52:38.679
that I have, which is actually, you know, I have

998
00:52:38.840 --> 00:52:41.360
some songs that I have that I shared with my daughters,

999
00:52:41.440 --> 00:52:46.199
and you know, we have excellent you know bard through

1000
00:52:46.239 --> 00:52:48.960
those songs. What is Laila Hathaway as you were meant

1001
00:52:49.000 --> 00:52:51.480
for me? And I like that song but my oldest

1002
00:52:51.559 --> 00:52:54.079
because you know, she was my only child for ten

1003
00:52:54.239 --> 00:52:58.159
years and it was like, you know, Leila Layla Hathaway,

1004
00:52:58.599 --> 00:53:01.320
her relationship with her dad and him not being here,

1005
00:53:01.800 --> 00:53:04.800
and just I just felt like singing a song that

1006
00:53:04.960 --> 00:53:07.000
he said, I felt like it would bring my daughter

1007
00:53:07.119 --> 00:53:09.320
not closer together in the hat she she knows that

1008
00:53:09.480 --> 00:53:11.400
song and she hears that anyway, I don't care if

1009
00:53:11.440 --> 00:53:14.400
she's upset with me or if she's not speaking to me,

1010
00:53:14.480 --> 00:53:17.280
and she hears that she feels something, so you know.

1011
00:53:17.440 --> 00:53:20.480
And then the younger one, we had this love letter

1012
00:53:20.599 --> 00:53:23.440
from Casey and Jojop like that. But for me personally,

1013
00:53:24.079 --> 00:53:26.559
I'm a kid from the hip hop era. There's a

1014
00:53:26.679 --> 00:53:29.000
plethora of songs that I could go to, but ex

1015
00:53:29.079 --> 00:53:33.239
gotta guilt tigg is they playing? And uh, what's is

1016
00:53:33.320 --> 00:53:36.039
that Dead Bull? And I love it. It's just an

1017
00:53:36.159 --> 00:53:39.679
excited song at the beginning. It's like me telling the

1018
00:53:39.760 --> 00:53:42.199
world of comedy on the World of It, David, I

1019
00:53:42.400 --> 00:53:45.519
am that god and the beat and everything. It's just

1020
00:53:45.840 --> 00:53:48.079
it just gets being the bullet. So if I had

1021
00:53:48.119 --> 00:53:51.760
to go to song, that's definitely it. But for the

1022
00:53:51.920 --> 00:53:57.920
ladies listening, that's totally like. You know, I'm a Barbie

1023
00:53:58.039 --> 00:54:01.000
gay Plan and I love barbaik Games songs and I

1024
00:54:01.079 --> 00:54:04.000
think you go almost paint anything, but you know you

1025
00:54:04.159 --> 00:54:07.280
love the ball is one of my favorites, and what's

1026
00:54:07.320 --> 00:54:09.440
going all the things like that, But yeah, and still

1027
00:54:09.480 --> 00:54:10.480
to give them to you, that's.

1028
00:54:10.360 --> 00:54:13.800
My goal to thank you for sharing those. I you know,

1029
00:54:13.880 --> 00:54:17.119
what I'm finding to be so exciting about this question

1030
00:54:17.679 --> 00:54:21.519
is literally everybody lights up when they talk about music,

1031
00:54:21.800 --> 00:54:25.519
like it's really cool. And I love music because it

1032
00:54:25.639 --> 00:54:29.400
makes me feel there's parts of your brain that music

1033
00:54:29.519 --> 00:54:33.079
reaches and you know works with that words don't so

1034
00:54:33.320 --> 00:54:36.960
like I and music has healed and music is empowering.

1035
00:54:37.559 --> 00:54:39.719
But the thing I think I like most is that

1036
00:54:39.800 --> 00:54:43.559
it connects people in the most unique ways. So I'm

1037
00:54:43.639 --> 00:54:46.440
so so grateful for for the variety too. You you

1038
00:54:46.519 --> 00:54:49.000
gave it, you hit us up with some variety. I'm

1039
00:54:49.039 --> 00:54:54.719
grateful and it's good. I love it and I want

1040
00:54:55.119 --> 00:54:57.280
I mean, I could talk to you for forever, but

1041
00:54:58.039 --> 00:54:59.960
we you know, I don't know if we keep people

1042
00:55:00.280 --> 00:55:04.480
attention that long. So I want to ask one last thing,

1043
00:55:04.679 --> 00:55:07.440
and that is what you would add, if anything, what

1044
00:55:07.639 --> 00:55:10.159
you would want to share, what you're currently working on,

1045
00:55:10.400 --> 00:55:13.119
that you'd want to spotlight, anything like that that I

1046
00:55:13.239 --> 00:55:15.519
didn't ask. Now is your time to shine?

1047
00:55:16.280 --> 00:55:19.519
Oh wow. So there's a lot of different things. Some

1048
00:55:19.679 --> 00:55:21.840
comedy shows coming up. I'm actually going to do a

1049
00:55:21.920 --> 00:55:24.880
couple of Toy dates with one of the fresh new

1050
00:55:24.960 --> 00:55:27.880
faces of comedy and gentlemen. His name is Ali Sadik.

1051
00:55:27.960 --> 00:55:30.039
I'm going to go out on Toy. He starts his

1052
00:55:30.199 --> 00:55:32.679
thirty city tours, so I'm going to help out in

1053
00:55:32.719 --> 00:55:37.119
the first couple of legs. May do more actually or

1054
00:55:37.760 --> 00:55:42.199
what else. There's Humicon look out for that that's bringing

1055
00:55:42.360 --> 00:55:47.440
comedy basic leadership and there's a company that has approached

1056
00:55:47.480 --> 00:55:49.840
me about being a part of that, so that's pretty cool.

1057
00:55:50.400 --> 00:55:53.960
Also doing some comedy nights in cities DAYU. That's gonna

1058
00:55:54.000 --> 00:55:57.639
be big. And I hate to say this, but my

1059
00:55:57.800 --> 00:56:00.440
special which I shot over a year and a half

1060
00:56:00.599 --> 00:56:05.239
November of twenty twenty four, uh, you know, We've been

1061
00:56:05.320 --> 00:56:08.360
in a litigation about certain aspects of this and that,

1062
00:56:08.599 --> 00:56:10.599
but I think we may do a reshoot, which is

1063
00:56:10.719 --> 00:56:13.360
actually excellent. So I've got a company that wants to

1064
00:56:13.400 --> 00:56:16.760
fund that. So I'm looking forward to doing that, and

1065
00:56:17.159 --> 00:56:19.960
you know, there's some possibilities and doing some other things

1066
00:56:20.199 --> 00:56:22.960
right down. That's basically what's going on. And you could

1067
00:56:22.960 --> 00:56:26.800
follow the Averdy Restaurant on Instagram and that's what's up.

1068
00:56:27.360 --> 00:56:30.039
Awesome, Well, Rudy, I am so grateful for you. Thank

1069
00:56:30.079 --> 00:56:32.800
you for showing up, showing out and teaching us some

1070
00:56:33.239 --> 00:56:37.000
really important things about the way that comedy can can

1071
00:56:37.079 --> 00:56:39.880
really impact everything we do if we let it.

1072
00:56:40.559 --> 00:56:43.800
Oh no, and real quick, I forgot this part. I

1073
00:56:43.880 --> 00:56:46.800
got the movie that I just wrote it called Karaoke Dugs,

1074
00:56:46.960 --> 00:56:49.840
please send rewrites right now. So just listen up. And

1075
00:56:50.000 --> 00:56:54.239
it's a fantastic you know, comedy adventure action that kind

1076
00:56:54.239 --> 00:56:57.119
of deal in New York City and it's it's just

1077
00:56:57.199 --> 00:57:00.360
a fun, uh you know movie written by my self.

1078
00:57:00.440 --> 00:57:04.039
And now we are gonna actually have some fun shooting that.

1079
00:57:04.320 --> 00:57:06.440
So look forward. Connect man.

1080
00:57:06.519 --> 00:57:11.840
